my wife is giving birth this month and it may be possible that we miss mass because of it. do we need to ask a priest for permission to do so before hand? or ask for some sort of dispensing our Sunday obligation for the event?

I’m sure that if your wife should give birth in the event when Sunday Mass is imminent, your obligation is dispensed. I don’t think they would perfer to have the baby pop out during Mass. Yes, the obligation is lifted in the event of the birth of a child.

While pregnancy is a state of health and birth is a normal process, it still falls under “being ill” as far as missing Mass. Whether your child is born at home, a birth center, or a hospital, the “rules” still apply as though she would be recovering from an illness…and should her doctor or midwife be Catholic, she’ll be excused from attending Mass that day as well.

You don’t have to be ill to be dispensed from attending Sunday mass. Perhaps the nurse/midwife will be doing consecutive 12 hr shifts. If so, she’s also dispensed. As are vacationers stuck at an airport on Sunday through no fault of their own.

Goodness, gracious, no. God does not expect the impossible.

First off, congratulations!

Others have already answered the way I was going to, but I wanted to add one thing. When I gave birth to my daughter, I was in the hospital on a Sat-Sun. I told the hospital I was Catholic and would like to be visited. I didn’t get to experience a whole Mass, but I did receive Communion and prayed. Your wife might be able to do the same.

there was a question on the form if we would like to be visited by a clergyman from our faith. i’m not sure though if there will be a priest there. i’m hoping there would, but i just don’t want to assume

Put together a list of the phone calls to make when your wife goes into labor. On that list, put the Parish Office - call the office and say “Mrs. Choy is in labor at General Hospital. She would like a visit from the Priest.”

you do not need a formal dispensation to miss Mass for a good reason, and this certainly qualifies. If you can’t make it to Mass for a good reason, like this one, you don’t have an obligation.
