If I miss mass one week, I should not receive communion until I go to confession, right? By not going to mass, I have offended God and I don’t want to do it again by taking communion when I should not. Are there any other sins that should keep me from taking communion?

Serious sin is what should keep you from the Eucharist. If you missed Mass through deliberate negligence (“I don’t feel like going today”) that would be serious sin. If you were ill, or had to take care of a sick child that day, then it wouldn’t be a serious sin.
Also, traveling and not being able to find a Catholic Church for Mass would not be a serious sin.
