Missing parts of Mass

On Sunday somebody I know only stayed in Mass till the second reading as they had to go to work. I asked why they did not go to the mass in the evening and they said they were going out for a meal.
My question is how much of the Mass should we attend to fulfill are Sunday obligation, are there any rules laid down.:confused:

Common opinion is that one should at least arrive before the Gospel and stay until Communion, as these two points, and what happens in between (the Consecration) is the heart of the Mass, but there’s no hard and fast rule. It’s good that they at least made the effort to attend part of Mass rather than skipping altogether.

Was there any particularly pressing need for your friend had to go to that meal though - was it a work-related function for instance? Any reason why they couldn’t have gone to Mass on Saturday evening perhaps?

I don’t want to judge without knowing all the facts, but at the same time I’d hate to think that anything less than the most pressing sort of obligation to family or work would lead anyone to place their social life ahead of their duty to God.
 
Offertory, consecration and communion are required parts of the Mass to attend in order to satisfy the rule.
