What would you do if you went on a mission trip?

I would appreciate your thoughts and ideas.

I have never been on such trip but I am hoping that I will be going soon this November if I get my passport renewed on time. Please pray for me for this.

If I will be on that trip, I pray and smile 🙂 …and do what I am directed to do. 🙂 Besides that, I’ll bring rosaries, praying cards, etc …

I have gone on mission trips to Mexico, and to Appalachia. Have visited projects where we sponsor children in Mexico, and was able to stay for longer period to help teach CCD and improve my Spanish. Old Parish sends a group to eastern KY each year with Glenmary missioners, they have a project ready for us, fixing a house or something similar, and includes some kind of event or social at the local church, something cultural.

we take groups of HS and college kids on spring break over the border where homes have already been built, and the kids build furniture, doors and do finishing work.

I personally can’t do much physical work anymore, but can be a chaperone, babysitter, bookkeeper, cook, take care of those on the trip etc. This will probably be my last year however as it is hard to maintain control over my health issues while travelling in a primitive mode like this. I did have a bad asthma attack last time and that creates a burden and problem for the group, and I don’t want to risk it. I will work on this side with recruiting, prep, gathering supplies, pre-trip education etc.

Thank you both for your responses. Your ideas will be useful.

The reason I asked this question is as follows. Starting next year in June of 2009 I will be going on a bicycle ride. Part 1 of the ride will start in Fairbanks, Alaska and head south to the Tierra del Fuego. Along the way I would like to do some good works. I will have plenty of time to do so.

Part 2 of the ride will start either in China or India go to Africa and then Israel and Europe before returning to America. In India I plan to volunteer some time in one of the homes started by Mother Teresa. Also, I am currently raising money to donate to Sister Margaret “Peg” Donovan of Maryknoll whose project of teaching people to build homes is in Tanzania.

So any ideas are appreciated.

I also will pray a rosary each day, especially in front of any abortion places I might pass along the way.

wow, that will require you a lot of prepration, and I am very grateful to you that you can do this. I keep you in my prayer.

I also thank puzzleannie for your advices.

I’ve got my passport renewed. The new passport is improved with technology except they made my picture look darker. I hope they can recognize my face in the passport when I pass the Mexico border.

Live your faith. Since the purpose of your journey is mission, steel yourself to live as a saint while you are there. The opportunities will appear before you.

The youth from our parish went on a mission trip to Central America. While “witnessing their faith”, they did not even bother to attend mass. Other than committing a mortal sin…

Christ’s peace.
