Mixed up Rosary?

Hey everyone,

I hate to say it but I mixed up my rosary mysteries. I said the sorrowful mysteries yesterday when in actuality I should have said the Luminous ones.

Today is Friday the day of the sorrowful mysteries. Should I say them or say the luminous ones which I neglected to say?

You can pray it however you want, as long as it’s prayerful. There are traditional days, but they are only suggestions and it’s not wrong to do something else. You don’t even have to meditate on the mysteries at all when you pray the Rosary.

Actually, some people traditionally only pray the sorrowful mysteries during Lent. Some people never pray the Luminous mysteries.

Again, you can do as you wish. You may have “mixed up” the plan you typically follow, but to pray the sorrowful mysteries on a Thursday is in no way “wrong.” Be at peace!

The idea of only praying the sorrowful mysteries during lent does sound appealing, since they bring to mind out lord’s suffering the most.

Well, if that’s what you want to do, then you can do that.

Or if you decide to swap out and then go back to the traditional days, that’s fine too.

There is no right answer that would apply to more than a single individual. Maybe stick with the sorrowful mysteries for a few days in a row, and see how that goes for you.

I once prayed the Resurrection instead of the Baptism of Jesus when I prayed the Luminous once and didn’t realise until afterwards.

I meditate on the same 7 joys of the vigin everyday - annunciation, visitation, nativity, adoration of the magi, finding in the temple, the resurrection of Jesus, and the coronation of the virgin. It’s all fine, relax.

You don’t even have to meditate on the mysteries at all when you pray the Rosary.

I think the popes might disagree with you in that point. From St John Paul II’s 2002 Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae:
12. The Rosary, precisely because it starts with Mary’s own experience, is an exquisitely contemplative prayer. Without this contemplative dimension, it would lose its meaning, as Pope Paul VI clearly pointed out: “Without contemplation, the Rosary is a body without a soul, and its recitation runs the risk of becoming a mechanical repetition of formulas, in violation of the admonition of Christ: ‘In praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think they will be heard for their many words’ (Mt 6:7). By its nature the recitation of the Rosary calls for a quiet rhythm and a lingering pace, helping the individual to meditate on the mysteries of the Lord’s life as seen through the eyes of her who was closest to the Lord. In this way the unfathomable riches of these mysteries are disclosed”.(14)

I’m pretty sure meditation on the mysteries is one of the conditions for gaining the Rosary indulgence.

I don’t know the right answer but I would go luminous. I don’t want to say I hated Tuesdays and Fridays when I did say the rosary daily but they were tough sometimes. Though there are benefits from praying those mysteries, don’t get me wrong. It’s not my favorite word or slant to take in an argument , but you can make a case for going too ‘rigid’ here. Besides, you can print out a guide, right? - it tells you the mysteries for the day/week. I made a notebook with the guide and photos, images for praying. I also skipped some mysteries, prayed others longer. Now that I remember I was actually quite flexible with the mysteries. I can pray on the Annunciation or the Ascension for an hour - other ones only a few minutes fruitfully (that I can tell). I tended to pray the rosary in a way that was productive rather than following the guide by rote and not really being engaged. (God can tell the difference to my mind so why bother trying to fool him.)

No biggie - I’d do sorrowful again since it is Lent…you could double down and do both if you have the time!

I have occasionally taken my favorites from each and said them, adding one set for something that happened in my life I felt was miraculous (like finding my wife…)

It is meant to be a personal devotion after all!

One can contemplate without following the specific formula of one mystery per decade. The warning about vain repetition is important, but I wasn’t advocating that.

If the OP means to gain the indulgence, then your second point may be useful.

Since the Rosary is a private and entirely optional devotion, I stand by my original assertion: it may prayed however an individual wishes. This is meant to reassure the OP that he is not doing anything wrong, even if he didn’t follow his original intent.
