Should Catholics have been particularly offended by the mock crucifixion of the singer Madonna for her 2006 Confessions Tour?

Catholics shouldn’t be offended by anything. Being offended has never solved a single problem in world history, yet has caused a great many. Speak the truth and defend what’s right, but don’t waste time and energy being offended.

I suggest ignoring people looking for attention through intentionally provocative acts. They’ll quickly stop doing them if nobody pays attention.

I think upon seeing/hearing things like this, it’s natural to have a strong emotional reaction.

But rather than focusing on being offended, we should focus on praying for those who bring images like this into the public arena (and those that applaud them for it).

To be honest ignoring this behaviour gives them no satisfaction. Mockery of Catholicism, however, is an old and tired standby for controversial female artists seeking attention. Madonna is part of a long list of artists. Remember Lady Gaga dressed up as a nun and swallowed a rosary in her music video “Judas”. Also a few years back Rapper Nicki Minaj gave a sacrilegious performance mocking a host of Catholic rituals and practices, including the sacrament of confession and the rite of exorcism. Her performance began in a confessional, snarling at a “priest” as if she were possessed. I can remember being so offended and mad at the time but it’s only themselves they are harming and praying for them is the answer I think.

Another thing about this regards the whole phenomenon of the romanticisation of traditionally Christian markers: a nun’s habit, the crucifix, and so on. These things represent, to the secular (or ought I say sexular) culture, objects of mockery. It is water in the pale of pride, an anaesthetic to fill their individual insecurities.

What I speak of, mostly, is the root of all anti-Catholic/anti-Christian representations in the media. Their mockery of us is a testament of their misunderstanding of themselves and their own idea of what the ‘self’ is as it relates to the ‘eternal’ and the ‘true.’

I wasn’t offended by it, in fact, I thought it was sad! That is why we pray for these individuals, so popular and famed for their God-given talent, for mocking the One who inspired such ability. We ask contrition on their behalf: forgive them, Father, for they know not what they do.

That’s nice. So nice. She should know, really know, what Jesus went through that night in the garden, what He suffered hanging on that cross, and why He did it.

This is an awesome post. 👍

One of my friends has repeatedly spoken about his prayers for her to become a cloistered nun.

What I don’t understand is why it’s “fine” to hate God and Mary, but other religions which are even similar to ours are left alone and shown the respect that they deserve.

Let’s call a spade a spade.

Eastern religions are also treated in a very cavalier way. Just look at most popular media (films, video games, etc.) - even a casual look will show the careful observer that elements of Hinduism, Buddhism, etc. are often tossed around lightly with no regard for their original context. Heck, even Pope Benedict XVI, when he was a Cardinal, spoke out against “Western, manufactured forms of Buddhism”.

The only two which get a pass are Judaism (because the Holocaust and its aftermath put the kibosh on casual anti-Semitism) and Islam (because, well, people are scared to offend the more violent adherents of that religion). Anything else is fair game. 😦

Yes.

Catholicism is treated as an object of mockery and contempt while Buddhism and Hinduism are treated as playgrounds.

I agree with you wholehearted and it can get to me alot at times but I think it’s because the Catholic Church is the one true church and they know it. Satan is behind this because he knows it too and will do anything to attack the church because he despises it and wants the church to be finished so to speak. People will attack and persecute the church until Jesus returns. Jesus was persecuted, and he told us that the same thing would happen to us in John 15:20 “Remember the word I spoke to you, ‘No slave is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.”

Madge has been trying to find a way to stay relevant for years. I think she’s trying to capitalize on the SJW women to boost failing record sales, but that’s just my own theory.
