Actually, the Church calls them commentators, as they are specified in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal. The commentator role is distinct from the cantor who leads singing.
Maybe so, but our cantors fulfill that role in my area of Pennsylvania, as noted in several parishes here.🙂 We do not have anyone else in the role of “commentator” other than the cantor.

I love being a lector. I love being a commentator (in our parish, this person also does the prayers of the faithful). I love being a member of the choir. I love playing my flute at mass. What I wouldn’t want at all is to “win” at being any of these.

I get compliments on all of those ministries that I perform. And I graciously accept them from the person who offered them.

Thanks to all those who shared. I suppose the general sentiment is that the search for “Model Lectors” isn’t such a great idea.
