Moderation Abuse Question

I did wonder if it could have been automated for some strange reason.

I have an Irish friend who used a perfectly innocent phrase from that part of the world that was classed as some kind of slang for something bad in the USA and was automatically suspended for 2 weeks.
I know there can be such errors.

Thanks for the guidance.

Yes, this is an American website and American English is the default setting!

Yes. I think he’s fully aware of that now.

I think Europeans probably need an alternative ideally.

Thank you all for your help.

You’ve provided me with the precise answer to the question I was asking.

God bless.

I think if your Irish friend were to explain to the mods that it was an innocent mistake, they would quite likely agree to lifting his suspension. It’s worth a try.

From what he told me he did precisely that, as he was contacted directly to explain why he’d been suspended. He asked them to simply Google the phrase as that would clear it up immediately, but he received no response.

Apparently, only a single word in the phrase used was a slang word for something bad, so it was a bit of a stretch to read it negatively.

Just something lost in translation and an unfotunate turn of events, I guess, which he can see for himself. I think the thing that upsets him the most is that it’s a word for something very bad which he now feels he’s been associated with. It’s a real shame as he"a an old man and a real gentleman. It’s really wounded him.

I suspect it may have been a mistake to ask them to google for an explanation. The mods are very busy people. If he’d just apologized and explained that in Ireland it’s an everyday, inoffensive word, they would probably have accepted that and canceled his suspension.

Your friend can contact the moderators by going to catholic.com and selecting “contact us”, which is at the very bottom of the page.

And please reassure him that he hasn’t been associated with anything; I’m sure no-one here will even remember the phrase used. And even if they did, I am sure they know there was no ill intent behind it.

Yes. He did that and told them they could check on Google just to verify if need be. He just had nothing back in response.
Perhaps they didn’t receive his message?

Thanks for that. It’s kind of you.

I have assured him that no one would even give it a second thought, and that it certainly wasn’t his intention, but he’s just mortified I’m afraid.
He’s old, and it’s been a bit of a shock for him I think.
He won’t be coming back.

He won’t be coming back.
I hope what you relay eases his anxiety. I received some of those for the same reason. Took me a bit to learn some words are just automatically screened, and not a personal human decision.

You’re very kind.

He said that he would have left after that experience whether he’d been cleared of any culpability of not anyway. Once bitten etc…

It’s a shame.

Having said that, now I’ve made my own feelings known to the moderators, I’m going too.

God bless you for your goodness.

Thanks for your kind words. I will tell I’m you said that, and that it was, indeed, most likely not a human decision. If he accepts that, then I’m sure it will help.

God bless you for that.

With the stress this incident has caused, if this was some automatic response, then I would hope that this could serve as an example of what a rash judgement can do to others. We can hurt others by flagging their posts, so we best be positive that a action is needed, not just that our feelings got hurt, or that we do not know how to respond in words, or that we simply do not like someone else or their opinion.

Overflagging is something that we have all observed, I think, from time to time here at CAF, but in this present instance it seems to have been a first-time user who fell foul of the computerized screening system through no fault of his own. It’s a pity he has taken it so much to heart. From what @UGCC has told us here, I’d say he’s overreacting to a very minor inconvenience. I’ve had posts of my own removed from the threads because I had inadvertently broken some rule or other. It’s a learning process. You learn that a certain innocent-sounding word is taboo in American English, and next time you use another word instead. That’s all there is to it, really.

This is what happens when we let our technology make our decisions for us.

Same here. And yes, sometimes the removal seems unfair but many things in this life are unfair so I just move on.
