I get forced all the time to watch cartoons with my nieces/nephews. some stuff out there is truly bizarre viewing. Uncle Grandpa, Adventure time, My fairy godparents all have very bizarre plots, ultra weird characters, stuff not appropriate for kids under 10, lots of screaming, etc.

Whatever happened to good ole fashioned tunes like Bugs bunny, Yosemite sam, etc.?

Am I overreacting to these modern cartoons? Is this some underhanded plot by Hollywood to warp young kids’ minds?

Tbh, I don’t really watch any American cartoons anymore outside of RWBY, so I’m not sure what kinds of things are in today’s American cartoons.

Could u give specific examples from those shows that u think are inappropriate for kids under 10?

Check out adventure time. A lot of characters are inanimate objects that talk, characters that look like monsters. the plots make no sense, very disjointed. A lot of conflict and yelling and screaming and at one another. Not even funny. At least the saving grace is that my little nieces like to watch SpongeBob. At least that has some humor to it.👍

You are right. A lot of those shows seem aimed at adults, IMO. There are a lot we won’t let our grandchild watch – all the sloppily drawn ones, like Courage the Cowardly Dog. Even Spongebob is questionable. I like Clifford, Curious George, the better the characters are drawn, the better the shows seem to be.

I watch Adventure Time sometimes with my 11 year old son. I find the stories a bit dark and bizarre. The animators try to sugar-coat it with bright colours just to disguise its true nature. Even SpongeBob Square Pants (which my son also loves) is starting to look annoying. They’re starting to show some gross stuff in it. Its starting to go down the way of The Simpsons (I used to love those guys) which used to be family fare. Family Guy and American Dad are obviously geared towards adults. One cartoon series that I find hilarious is The Regular Show (with all those funny and silly characters) which my son and myself love. Good thing, people had gotten tired of MTV’s Beavis and Butthead (and soon enough South Park).

Its not like cartoons of the past like Popeye, Tom and Jerry or Dastardly and Muttley can be considered kid friendly, but they were broadcast during family time anyway.

I agree that today’s cartoons are bizarre, but its not like the older folks didn’t have their share of strange cartoons either.

Totally agree there.

Infact, I don’t think it’s possible to air a cartoon showing all the ‘violence’ in Tom & Jerry anymore at normal times.

I’m also left disgruntled with the quality of cartoons nowadays, I think the themes are just ridiculous. The cartoon stations I grew up with have changed for the worse.

Personally I grew up in the Cartoon Cartoon Era, with Dexter’s Lab, Powerpuff Girls, Ed, Edd n Eddy and the pioneer of Anime Cartoons, Samurai X (or Rurouni Kenshin), but the themes nowadays are just terrible. Maybe it’s part of growing up that makes me not relate to them, but I don’t think Hollywood is out to get our kids or something.

Quite true. 👍

And quite frankly, when I have my own children, I’m going to give them a good exposure to the old classics. Donald Duck forever! 👍

I couldn’t believe the things my cousins about 10 years younger watched growing up; such complete and utter garbage on “Disney Channel” and the likes that they passed off as funny. I can only imagine it’s worse now. My kids will be raised on “The Rifleman” and other shows that display good values.

I try to keep my daughter away from the adult cartoons like, “American Dad,” or "Family Guy.’ She likes, "Doc McStuffins, Clifford, Dora, and ninja turtles. I think some of the cartoons now are bizarre but I wouldn’t say they were much more violent than the ones in the past. I can’t count how many times I watched Wile E. Coyote get run over by a steam roller, fall off a cliff, or get blown to bits by some ACME product. I sort of felt sorry for him, wished he could’ve caught the road runner at least once.

Given that the older alternatives are things like Tom & Jerry or Loony Toons, I’m not sure what you expect. Animation is, by its nature, a great medium for absurd plots and over-the-top drama or comedy. It’s my understanding that Adventure Time is one of the few successful western cartoons with some drama, though I don’t watch it myself. The few episodes I have seen were decent. I prefer superhero shows, since they tend to be more dramatic and character-driven (and the plots make sense, if that’s a concern for you), but they’ve been getting cancelled recently. Action-comedy is the standard in animation, and it’s hard to break out of it. I really think this is just a continuation of what animation has always been. It’s not an underhanded plot (and it has nothing to do with hollywood), it’s just that the networks are slow to change. But even if superhero shows did come back, wacky comedy is never going away. It’s something animation does really well, and a lot of kids love it. I don’t think bright colors or talking objects do them any harm.

Honestly, I wish people would be allowed to put more darkness and conflict into children’s cartoons. It’s difficult to showcase heroism without contrasting it with encroaching darkness.

There aren’t really any good dramatic or pure comedic shows on TV right now. The superheroes have mostly been relegated to DVDs for the moment. I guess if you’re looking for something more age-appropriate, but still fun and colorful, you could look into anime. Most of the Digimon series are appropriate for a 6-10 year old, and the plots involve fantasy (talking monsters, other worlds, etc) without going crazy. If you want to stick with western stuff, some superhero shows are OK, but overall they skew towards older audiences (10-14). If bright colors, talking objects, and general weirdness bother you, you have to realize that that gets rid of most modern shows for younger kids. Realism is generally reserved for the older crowd. It’ll be difficult to find any shows that fit your standards if you’re not going to watch them yourself. 🤷

If you’re just here to see if it’s a conspiracy… Not really, no. But it is kind of annoying that these are the only shows that get air time right now, and character-driven pieces with more depth are passed over or canceled. I’m still not over the cancelation of Green Lantern’s animated series. There wasn’t much screaming in that one. Lots of heroism and space adventures and talking robots, though. Hopefully I’ll get enough money to buy the DVD’s sometime. 😛

I can’t say I’ve watched a ton of cartoons recently; being 23 and all. When I was growing up we had awesome shows like Darkwing Duck(my favorite 😃 ), Talespin ( 😃 ) , Ducktales, Dexter’s Lab, Batman, etc. But I gotta say, I kinda like some of the shows on Cartoon Network today. I mean I think Phineas and Ferb is a good show, but that’s it for Disney Channel. On Cartoon Network, I think Adventure Time, Billy & Mandy, Fosters, Gumball, Teen Titans and Chowder are a thousand times better then what’s offered on Nick, Disney Channel, and others.

Just my $0.02. 🤷

I share concerns about cartoons especially ones directed to older audiences. But my girls like Dora, Sophia the First, Jake and the Neverland Pirates, Etc. Occasionally we have to talk about something or other but most of the time it is pretty good. Here is the thing. Because I have fond memories of childhood I have tried to get them to watch older cartoons.

I was AMAZED

Bugs Bunny was my all time favorite growing up. Now, I was shocked at the violence and even the dialogue. Scooby Doo? The same. If you watch cartoons now, and then go back and watch the others, you will see that we watched just as bad if not worse.

Best solution. Turn off the TV!

Lol, I remember growing up with Ghostbusters and My little Pony. And Nick Jr was great.
You can find a few little gems these days. The new My little pony is great, my boyfriend andI watch it together. I highly recommend it to parents. Its a great show for girls and boys, it teaches some great lessons.

Yeah, I think nostalgia is playing a bigger part in this conversation than it should. Old cartoons have most of the same problems as the new ones.

Indeed. Think of all the blowing up and getting hit on the head with anvils and even the use of guns in some of the older cartoons. As for the dialogue, I think that just goes to show that – when we were kids – the “adult dialogue” really did go over our heads like they said it would. :o

I don’t think we can really expect that all cartoons be appropriate for all ages any more than we can expect all TV in general to be appropriate for all ages. But, yeah, some of the newer cartoons strike me as kind of weird. It’s a good thing my limited cable package pretty much only allows my kids to watch PBS Kids shows. I haven’t come across anything too objectionable on there yet.

I don’t think it is as much that the shows have changed but that as we get older we start seeing all of the things between the lines. I was watching Powerpuff Girls recently with my daughter. After a bit I turned it off. It was full of things that was in no way appropriate.

I see The Real Show and Adventure Time more and Tween shows than a young child’s show. Even then some of the content isn’t really appropriate. Not that Animaniacs was any better. 🤷

I basically decided long ago, that I’d screen what they watched. When the kids get too old for me to do that easily, they’ll get the same rule I had as a kid, “You can only watch it when I’m with you.”

Parents do need to watch the shows and children shouldn’t watch that much TV anyways.

For the OP -when it comes to TV- turn it off or pick and chose selectively.

This generation has cable, Netflix, Hulu, Youtube(hitch it to TV) and DVD’s. Though it can be costly, each family needs to look at what they can afford. The library is also a good source.

There are shows for 3 plus - Care Bear (friendship), Mickey Mouse and Gang, Veggietales, Thomas the Tank (personalities and problem solving), Education songs(Sesame Street plus so many more) are on Youtube.

As mentioned My Little Pony(friendship) educational ones like Super Why and Sid the Science Guy. Even Barbie(Ken can do everything) isn’t bad - even some like Popeye. I like all the mystery in Scooby Doo.(usually a logical conclusion)

There are older shows like Shari Lewis " 100 things to do" - 1 minute tricks.
If you can find them 3,2,1 Contact (Science) or Zoom (show with lots of tricks) or even Mr. Wizards World(science).

Westerns are not easy to find, have to be older -Rifleman or Gunsmoke.

How bout DVD’s like “Earth”(bunch to pick from).

There are many family TV shows(on DVD), movies and Disney.
