I’m having a discussion with someone who describes himself as agnostic. One of the questions he has about the Church is, why, now that we have modern science and people are generally more skeptical, do we not have so many miracles like those described in the Bible and by earlier Church histories? He sees this as evidence that those so called miracles could be explained away by ignorance and that now it doesn’t happen because we know more about psychology and how the world works, etc.

I told him that I think that there are miracles that happen even now, but I’m not read up enough on them to give him any convincing arguments for them. Does anyone know of any modern miracles, especially those that have been rigorously examined and still found to be true or at least unexplainable other than as a miracle?

I don’t know much about miracles other than that there is ultimately only One and that it is always happening.

People want a religious experience?
Right here, right now, you’ve got it! although you may not know it.

Yep, even when things are bland and humdrum: imagine that! How does that happen?
So there is your friend walking around, “Miracle, what miracle?” and all around him is this infinite mystery of creation, that infinite mystery of course being our Creator, right here, right now.

Anyway, lots of people have existed, and the people of the Bible are mentioned for a reason, which would be to help us understand God, ourselves, and the relationship that exists between us.
Where there are miracles described, it seems to me, that they occur so that we may understand.

Back to miracles here: When I think about thoughts coming to mind and being translated into words that go on to form these understandable squiggles on the monitor and and how through my senses, I am able to somehow, because of some spiritual aspect of my being, connect with the monitor, I am pretty much amazed and dumbfounded. (Sorry for the very long sentence.)
Now the next guy is going to start talking about molecules and neurons and all sorts of really peripheral things that just add to the mystery, but seem to give him some sort of explanation that makes this not a miracle. Go figure.

I guess what I wanted to say is that it is not that people are becoming more intelligent, but generally humanity is actually becoming dumber and disconnected, as it moves away from religion and an awareness of the divine.

Every miracle that leads to beatification or canonization of a saint is examined thoroughly by a commission of doctors and other scientists.

Also, an example: at Lourdes there is a Medical Bureau, an official medical organization. Approximately 35 claims per year are brought to the attention of the Bureau.

Three to five each year are investigated more thoroughly - by examining the patient, the casenotes, and any test results (which can include biopsies, X-rays, CT scans, blood test results, and so on).

If this conference decides that further investigation is warranted, the case is referred to the International Lourdes Medical Committee, an international panel of about twenty experts in various medical disciplines and of different religious beliefs, which meets annually.

A full investigation requires that one of its members investigates every detail of the case in question, and immerses him/herself in the literature around that condition to ensure that up-to-date academic knowledge is applied to the decision. This investigator may also consult with other colleagues about the case.

For a cure to be recognised as medically inexplicable, certain facts require to be established:
  • The original diagnosis must be verified and confirmed beyond doubt
  • Code:
The diagnosis must be regarded as "incurable" with current means (although ongoing treatments do not disqualify the cure)
  • Code:
The cure must happen in association with a visit to Lourdes, typically while in Lourdes or in the vicinity of the shrine itself (although drinking or bathing in the water are not required)
  • Code:
The cure must be immediate (rapid resolution of symptoms and signs of the illness)
  • Code:
The cure must be complete (with no residual impairment or deficit)
  • Code:
The cure must be permanent (with no recurrence)
CMIL is not entitled to pronounce a cure “miraculous”; this can only be done by the Church. If CMIL decides a cure is medically inexplicable, the case is referred to the Bishop of the diocese where the cured subject lives. It is he who, in consultation with his own experts and with the Vatican, makes the decision about whether a cure is “miraculous”.

Of over 7000 healings declared in Lourdes since the days of the apparitions, over 2000 have been delared inexplicable. Of these, the Catholic Church has acknowledged 68 as miraculous (the full list can be found here , in Italian).

I believe even one such event should be more than enough, let alone over two thousand.

And we are speaking of only one place in the whole world.

These miracles happen daily all over the world, and they do not all involve a physical healing inexplicable according to science. A miracle may also be someone suddenly receiving a special and expensive medical treatment when there was no hope for salvation before, or someone receiving extraordinary peace and courage in the face of an incurable disease, thus dying in peace after having strengthened and consoled their loved ones.

YOU are a modern miracle! So is your friend! Just look around you! Look at the stars on a dark night, listen to the birdsong in a forest. Miracles are all around us!

I recommend this article by Mark Shea: ncregister.com/blog/mark-shea/the-resurrections-of-matthew-2752-53

It points to several modern miracles and points out why atheists don’t find them convincing. Hint: it’s because they have a bias against accepting any miraculous claim and in fact they don’t think they are possible. Thus, they don’t spend any time investigating them. A good paragraph from the article is this one: Until you go and look and weigh the evidence, you are simply an average human being, doing what average human beings do and filtering out sensory data you don’t know how to fit into your ordinary interpretive framework. That atheists filter out evidence for miracles due to their dogmatic insistence that they cannot happen is no evidence that they can’t. It’s merely evidence that even if they did, the atheist would not be able to accept it till he repented of his stupid a priori dogma.

There are plenty of Modern Miracles. Like Our Lady of Guadalupe has so many.
Padre Pio did so many miracles and he died in 1968!
Miracles happen everyday!

Padre Pio bi-located to Italian bombers about to leave the runway in the sky! He bi-located when the Italian general was going to kill himself. He could read hearts and tell you your sins before you told them to him. He had the stigmatas! Any he did many more. He is also incorruptible.

Ever hear when that guy tried to bomb the Our Lady of Guadalupe painting? It was somewhat recently I think, and everything was destroyed, things in front of and BEHIND the painting, but the painting itself was left unharmed.
I heard scientists looked at the painting with a microscope, and found that the painting was not actually on the canvas, like the paint atoms were like hovering over the canvas itself. hard to describe, but its sort of like a hologram… and that explained why it wasnt eroding because apparently those types of paintings erode quickly.
And many more. Look em up!

I once heard this guy in the Middle East or something told a mountain to move and it literally moved. Relating to when Jesus said if you have faith you can move a mountain. I also heard once that this guy in the Middle East was murdered for being Catholic and these guys cut him up into pieces and put them into trash bags. But then this guy came back to life somehow and had scars on his arms, legs, neck where he was cut and travels the world sharing his testimony.
I heard of these children who were buried underground alive, again i think in the Middle East, and this guy with a crown of thorns who was bleeding everywhere dug them up and saved them.
Catherine De Hueck Doherty, founder of Madonna House, was a nurse and was helping this mans wife for awhile. One day this women said she saw two nuns approach her, and the husband asked Catherine who they were. Based off the description, it sounded to be The Little Flower and St Teresa of Avila, and this women who was very sick started to feel better. She eventually died, but only after she died in complete peace, with no pain, after Catherine gave the women a Mary medallion.

Last thing, the modern media doesnt tell us about any miracles. I wonder why?

Lourdes really is a hot spot for Miracles. If you want some modern miracles, go there 😉

I have posted in another thread how the angel pulled me to the other side of the road and saved me from a crime.
  1. I wasn’t thinking about anything supernatural at this time. I was in a hurry to go home to watch my favorite afternoon variety show.
  2. I felt the angel’s hand on my leg.
  3. I heard his audible voice. He said, “–my name–, just follow.”
  4. He wasn’t able to pull me to the other side when I didn’t consent. Initially, I didn’t want to consent because crossing to the other side would make my way home farther…and I was in a hurry to catch my favorite show. 😊
  5. The angel was only able to move me when I said “OK.” - freewill
  6. I was in a trance.
  7. A cool breeze woke me from the trance.
  8. I was on the other side of the road (but have no memory how I got there.)
  9. Validation: I witnessed the crime.
  10. I should have been the victim.

Hey if they don’t report the over 1 million people marching for life in the capital of the United States every year, do you expect them to report miracles? 🤷

I know right. Last march in DC I heard they reported there were just “thousands” there… ugh really grinds my gears more like hundreds and hundreds of thousands.

There are many miracles happening every day at the hands of the people who are on the frontline evangelising in wild countries like iris ministries in mosambique, David Hogan in Mexico.

These guys walk with the raw power of the Holy Spirit in its awesome glory. They preach the pure bible messages unwatered down. Unhurried because they only have 15 minutes before they have to start the next bit. My favourite in the world today is Mel Bond from Agape church in wentsville Missouri usa. He’s very humble and has left no room for personal pride. God does Miracles for his words every day.

The catholic priest I’m friends with assures me there are miracles at the hands of some priests but we don’t hear about it. One catholic man who regularly sees miracles is Eddie Russell from FMITV. Authorised under cannon law 300 and 301 by the catholic church.

There’s a build up of excitement in the spirit. Something big is about to break out on the earth I can feel it. I hope God is about to pour out so much grace upon the earth soon there’s gonna be miracles breaking out everywhere. The bible says ‘these signs will follow the one who believes’ ‘they will lay hands on the sick and they will recover’. MK 16,17,
Kinda hard if we never lay hands on the sick. It also says faith is now. and seek ye first the righteousness of God. So seek, get to the point where you can feel the holy spirit with you, then go out and share it with people. Oh and if you really want to get real close to God then study spiritual warfare as well. The demonic attacks on you and your family will become as blatant as the nose on your face when you begin in earnest. A few of my family have received miracle recoveries from accidents but I think it was God healing because of the sheer quantity of prayers being said for them. Not because someone spirit filled laid hands on them.
