So, you think it’s impossible for a modern composition of Sacred Music to be decent? Here is a recent (2003) polyphonic composition by an Italian Monsignor.

There is no doubt in my mind that modern music can be indeed sacred and beautiful. However, that all depends on the amount of intellect the individual puts forth into the music that he or she writes.
The notion that emotion alone suffices for a heartwarming composition is extremely absurd and juvenile and a statement of our brain-dead society. Emotion is nothing without a necessary education or self-taught knowledge in music theory and the forms that stem from it.

The composition may be modern but the hymn is one of the oldest in the Church (and the oldest Marian one). That makes a big difference, of course if you did it with guitars, synthesizers and drums, it would also be quite different of a presentation.
