Modern types of NFP - Need info

Modern types of NFP:

1. Sympto-Thermal
2. Creighton
3. Billings
4. Marquette.

Each uses one or more signs of a woman’s fertility (basal body temperature, cervical mucus, cervical position) and a charting system.

But these lack substantial definitions and is not self-explanatory. People who are not a doctor will find it hard to understand said methods. It is said that it’s 99% effective when followed correctly. But how can poor people follow if they didn’t know them? Do “poor” people need to enroll in NFP class or will they be accepted even they cannot pay for tuition fees? What I need to read at this point is practical procedures that can be followed in a layman’s term, just like condom which is all ready to use even without scientific explanations. Said NFP modern methods are not user-friendly and people will find it hard to understand. On the other hand, people will find contraception much user friendly and in which info are readily available, within reach and with steps which is much easier to understand and to follow even by the uneducated ones.

Again, more info is needed for the four methods in NFP. I hope somebody can post it here instead of just providing the link, and post some procedures and explanations too.

Being poor does not mean one is incapable of learning. Perhaps you should ask the thousands of illiterate Indian women to whom Mother Teresa taught NFP how it is that they could be “poor” and yet successfully learn this method. Or the Chinese peasants who learn NFP methods with government approval. They too are poor.

It seems you confuse “poor” with “ignorant” or “unteachable.”

I do not know any NFP programs that turn people away for inability to pay.

I think you are misunderstanding me. Information drive is what lacks in the Philippines. I started a thread with the hope to gather info on NFP so I could also share to fellow Filipinos whatever information I got from this forum.

However, there are many, many threads about some practical aspects of NFP and the different forms which are available on the Family Life forum. I suggest you scroll down to the bottom of this page to “Forum Jump,” select “Family Life” and do a search over there. There are many people practicing NFP on that forum who would be able to assist you.

Georgetown University developed the Standard Days Method, which is a counting type method, and can be kept track of on a circle of beads. I understand it is 95% for perfect use. I think its intended audience is places like Africa and such. Perhaps it would be an idea to mention to some individuals that you are thinking of. It is easy to understand. That is the point.

There are many people practicing NFP on that forum who would be able to assist you.

Thank you for your advice. I’ll try to do a search over the forum that you recommended before I advice those pro contraception (who are catholic) to look for another church because they don’t represent the characteristics and virtue of being catholic. They are like snake in the church.

The Philippine Bishops’ Conference has also approved of the Standard Days Method:

There is also a method called the Two Days Method, and also one called Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM) which is based on the natural effect of breastfeeding on fertility.

These are all methods of NFP.

That is not a symptom based NFP method. That is a variation of the old rhythm method. NOT effective in the way modern methods based on observation of fertile signs.

You should share official information with Filipinos by working with your diocesan family life office. I don’t understand why you are coming here wanting information randomly off the internet when the archdiocese of Manila has an NFP center.

I think if one is trying to offer an option to someone who is currently a condom user and one is trying to get them to stop, then the standard days could be effective enough to suit.

And the disadvantage of being very ineffective for women who do not have textbook cycles (most women do not have textbook cycles).

It is an approved method of Natural Family Planning.

Well, of course it is “approved” in the sense that it is based on abstaining from intercourse to avoid pregnancy. Any abstinence is perfectly acceptable to the Church.

It conforms to objective moral norms, that does not mean people should use it when they have more effective alternatives.

I think the OP’s concern is based on lack of knowledge, not facts. The OP didn’t even know there were NFP resources available through the archdiocese-- the John Paul II Natural Family Planning Center.

The OP made a lot of assumptions that just aren’t true.

Huh? I just meant that if they are happy with the user effectiveness of a condom, then they may likely be happy enough with the user effectiveness of standard days. A couple need not choose the most effective method of avoidance that is currently available. It is chosen by what meets the needs of that couple.
