And she wouldn’t be judged on it either. Lack of knowledge doesn’t make us culpable. Idk why we are discussing the reletavism of modesty. If being topless in some societies in modest, then why don’t guys move to that society? They would argue they aren’t lusting because it’s “modest”. I would say, it is lust, and it is immodest. Same standard for both men and woman. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, we protect and cover what is holy. Not wearing a shirt for a guy or girl doesn’t fully cover what is holy. But if someone wants to not wear a shirt they may, it’s not like I can stop anyone, nor would I try. We all have free will and we all have our own consciences but we all answer to the same God who created morality. Morality isn’t some creation from culture

I’m just looking for a little clarification because I’m confused. You say “our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, we protect and cover what is holy” then you reference wearing a shirt. But…under that same principle does it not apply to our entire body? Our whole body is a temple of the Holy Spirit…not just our chest or a specific body part, so would you not essentially be saying we need to be covered head to toe?

Obviously I know that’s impractical haha. Just confused by the logic.

You don’t think women can be turned on by a man’s bare chest?

I’m saying we should cover areas that are lusted after. The womb is a sacred place and so it should be covered. The pevical area should be covered since it is involved in reproduction for men and women. What does covering your ankle have to do with that? Do you reproduce with your toes? Extending the theory to that loses the point of it all.

We aren’t a collection of body parts, we shouldn’t show people that’s what we are

That’s true, but the standards for both sexes are different. Almost every part of the female body needs to be covered, while Muslim men need to cover from their navel to thighs? Can’t remember.

At least some sort of modesty is emphasised. Christianity doesn’t do that. Then again, we don’t have guidelines in general

@ChristinaAH
I wear leggings I make sure that I’m wearing a long, baggy sweater/sweatshirt that completely covers my bottom and pelvic area (because I know that wearing clothes that are tight around the bottom area can easily cause men to lust). My question is: Is it a sin to wear leggings even if the bottom and pelvic area is covered by a sweater because they’re still tight around the legs?
What do you feel ?,do you feel lustful, when you wear them? Honestly are you pure in your thoughts when your wear such clothes? when you feel it may offend or cause a sin or a stumbling block to other ? well only you can make the decision and decide.Though you may get varied opinions.

1 Corinthians 6:12 “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are beneficial. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything.

1 Corinthians 10:23 23 “All things are lawful,” but not all things are beneficial. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up.

2521 Purity requires modesty , an integral part of temperance. Modesty protects the intimate center of the person. It means refusing to unveil what should remain hidden. It is ordered to chastity to whose sensitivity it bears witness. It guides how one looks at others and behaves toward them in conformity with the dignity of persons and their solidarity.

[2522] Modesty protects the mystery of persons and their love. It encourages patience and moderation in loving relationships; it requires that the conditions for the definitive giving and commitment of man and woman to one another be fulfilled. Modesty is decency. It inspires one’s choice of clothing. It keeps silence or reserve where there is evident risk of unhealthy curiosity. It is discreet.

[2523] There is a modesty of the feelings as well as of the body. It protests, for example, against the voyeuristic explorations of the human body in certain advertisements, or against the solicitations of certain media that go too far in the exhibition of intimate things. Modesty inspires a way of life which makes it possible to resist the allurements of fashion and the pressures of prevailing ideologies.

2524 The forms taken by modesty vary from one culture to another. Everywhere, however, modesty exists as an intuition of the spiritual dignity proper to man. It is born with the awakening consciousness of being a subject. Teaching modesty to children and adolescents means awakening in them respect for the human person.

[2525] Christian purity requires a purification of the social climate . It requires of the communications media that their presentations show concern for respect and restraint. Purity of heart brings freedom from widespread eroticism and avoids entertainment inclined to voyeurism and illusion.

Do people sexualize male chests? I said men should wear a shirt
This is more about covering our body out of respect than because we do or don’t have breasts. We cover ourselves so others see us as a person and not as a thing. So getting back to the Zulu woman, this is why she should wear a shirt just as much as a Zulu guy should. But again, I’m not them and they will do as they will

If we could transport a woman wearing leggings and long tee-shirt back to the year 1819, would she be considered modest by 1819 standards?

I never understood the whole covering of our abdomen thing. The sacred argument seems to be new, not something based on scripture or early teachings. I could be wrong though. It’s really irritating that something as innocent as our bellies need to be hidden, speaking as someone who doesn’t even show it lol. While guys can flaunt their abs and most Catholics wouldn’t say much.

I agree with the concept of modesty but I detest the phrase ‘collection of body parts’ in reference to immodest women.

Those women are not calling themselves that. It’s the guys (and girls) who look at them and decide to use that dehumanizing phrase.

Honestly, people can lust after anything. Personally I’ve never felt an ounce of lust from seeing a man’s chest. Someone else will be different. I’d be more tempted by seeing an attractive man’s face than anything else but I could be in the minority there. Either way I don’t expect men to cover their faces 24/7. Sorry, was just confused. Thanks for responding.

But that doesn’t matter. We are talking about 2019. Modesty is now what modesty is now. Modesty back then was irrational and wrong, something JPII specifically got at with Theology of the Body. Our faith and our morality grows to become more correct overtime as we learn more and have more saintly people help us. Our modesty does not change from society to society because we so happen to want it to. Clothing now was modest in 1800s. It may not of been seen as modest but it was fundamentally modest, nothing disordered about it. Same thing with the Zulu woman, she is being immodest at the intrinsic level of the value of her action and her nature. It doesn’t change that she’s in a different society and thinks nothing of it just as it doesn’t with the 1800s

The womb is where Christ in his divinity met us in our humanity. As such, yes it is covered, it is a shrine. Christopher West notes this in TOB so does Jason Evert

Well, no baby Jesus was and will ever be in my womb. I don’t even know if there would be any babies in my womb tbh.

Also, some women don’t have wombs after surgeries.

Idk I just find that concept to be really weird. I don’t like being treated like some sort of empty tabernacle…
