hello,

i’d like to post one more topic concerning modesty in dress:

is it possible to make a short skirt modest by wearing leggings underneath?

can a pair of leggings really take away the sexyness of a miniskirt ?

many young girls here in germany act like this !

or do leggings catch men’s eye and make the short skirt even more sexy ?

this is a recent question in some of our schools here !

There’s a fine line between sexy and sexual. Think about the intention of what you intend to wear, do you wear it because it looks good, appropriate, or professional? Or do you wear it just to look sexy, or show off your legs or something like that?

As Catholics, we are called to be modest and restrained in what we wear and how we act. Christian moderation is an important consideration when it comes to clothing. I don’t think Catholic women should wear miniskirts at all, considering their only advantage over skirts that cover the knees is that they show more thigh skin. Showing more skin is not a worthy goal when it comes to clothing.

Speaking as a young man, I would much rather talk with a lady who dressed modestly without the desire to “show off” her body, but rather with the desire to show respect for her body, and emphasize her own personality and charm.

IMO leggings under a minishirt is modest. My daughter wears them for almost all her dresses or skirts so she doesn’t have to worry about showing too much skin.

I would say a short skirt is still a short skirt. My Daughters do not wear skirts above their knees but they still wear leggings or bike shorts underneath because they are younger and not always cognizant of certain things. Certainly leggings under a short skirt is more modest than bare skin (no chance of risque Britney Spears getting out of the car views). Length of skirt would matter as well; I’ve seen miniskirts which should actually be called belts and miniskirts that are just a few inches above the knee.

Depends what kind of leggings. For me (as a young man), leggings of the ‘stocking’ type (i.e. nylon, ‘fishnet’, etc.) seem to emphasise the wearer’s legs visually. I know I shouldn’t look! Fabric leggings, i.e. closer to trousers, do not seem to say ‘sexy’, and would probably be more modest, although they do make the wearer look a bit like she has just come from the gym.
Hope that helps,
zdon

If she’s concerned about showing too much skin, why doesn’t she wear knee level or full length skirts then?

I don’t understand the logic behind miniskirts. If you’re going to wear something that is a much more revealing version of something else, and then make it less revealing by wearing leggings or something, why not wear the more modest type of skirt in the first place?

This is our choice in allowing my daughter to wear some of the current fashions. She doesn’t like dresses and skirts for the most part, and occasionally she likes to look a bit like her peers when she does playdates with them. The leggings are a compromise. Its not like she’s wearing the miniskirt with the leggings to church or anyplace she is required to dress up. Its for more casual occasions and its part of being 11. She has always been pretty good at dressing modestly and will tell me when she feels uncomfortable even around her peers when they dress more immodestly.

Modesty in dressing is what we teach our children. We do not make excuses for them when they want to look more like their peers who follow the trendy call.We can teach them to dress fashionably and not to feel dowdy . When they show off the shape of their bodies whether it be stockinged legs in mini shorts, skirts or low cut and tight blouses to emphasize their bosoms it is sending a message, “hey, guy take a look at me!” Let’s be honest!:)Peace, Carlan

And I believe I am doing exactly that, teaching her to make more modest choices by having her wear some of the legging fashions under her miniskirt, singular, owns only one. She has taken though to wearing the leggings under almost all of the few dresses and skirts she owns because it makes her feel more modest When she gets older and has developed more of a girl’s body, the fashion choices will be made appropriately. There is nothing in her fashions for an 11 year old girl that would ever convey the message “hey look at me”. Quite the opposite. If anything the miniskirt camoflagues more of her body. She has one “fun” look that she can wear to certain occasions and this happens to be it.

As a husband and father this growing trend has bothered me. Pretty much all clothing marketed to women today is very form fitting. My wife dresses modestly and we do not let our daughter get too carried away.

Leggings can be very appropriate if paired with the right outfit. If I see a girl wearing leggings with a very tight and short skirt, too tight top and stiletto heals I cringe. If I see a girl wearing leggings with Keds or sandals, a denim skirt and a more modest top, I am less taken back.

But then again, I am a dad.:gopray2:

Although I am way past the age of having a young daughter to worry about, I felt compelled to weigh in on this topic. Personally I see nothing wrong at all with a young (or even not-so-young) girl/woman wearing a skirt above her knees and some leggings underneath. The leggings I am talking about are opaque and dark and totally conceal the legs themselves. A skirt that is skin-tight or is super-short is one thing, a skirt that has some ease and is just slightly above the knees is perfectly acceptable in my mind. Most young girls want to dress like their friends and as long as those friends are not wearing things that are super tight or short then I think it is important that girls feel that they fit in with their friends. If any of you have seen a show on TLC called “19 Kids and Counting” (or is is 20 now?) those girls all wear very long skirts, down to their ankles. But they are home-schooled and seldom mix with kids outside their own community of other home-schooled fundamentalist children. Among their own group they fit right in but if they were in public schools they would stand out like sore thumbs and kids don’t feel good about themselves when this happens.

There is nothing inherintly wrong or sinful about human legs and covering them with leggings under a skirt in no way changes them into objects of “desire.” To those of you who think otherwise, I am sorry but I very much disagree. Modest swimsuits certainly show legs and leggings under skirts conceal much more than that. Heck, if I had the legs for that look, I might indulge myself. In the office where I work more than a few ladies wear that look when the weather cools off on Casual Fridays and I have yet to see a single male so distracted that he can’t go about his business.

If the leggings are really dark like navy blue, black, brown why not. I’m not a fan of them myself and never wear them anymore…did that in the 80’s and 90’s can’t go back.

LOL! Me too (except I stopped wearing them in the 80’s). I have always heard that if you are old enough to have worn a trend the first time you are too old to wear it the second.

One of the designers on Project Runway had a model wearing satin leggings and a judge (Micheal Kors) said that even models don’t look good wearing those (he was right).

You couldn’t pay me enough money to wear an ankle length skirt. 🙂 I just think those look ridiculous, especially on me. I know they are comfortable, and some people prefer them (My SILs and MIL wear them a lot), but I have never seen anyone who looks good in one. As for below the knee, I would consider it depending on the type of skirt. I see nothing wrong with the pre-teen and teen girls wearing cotton leggings under a skirt. I mean, it’s as much coverage as an ankle length skirt and doesn’t fit too closely around the butt and hips which is the important part. With kids that age, you have to choose your battles, and if the worst thing they want to do is wear a fashionable style (in a modest way), consider yourself lucky.

Hey I have no issues with leggings! I just object to miniskirts, especially on teenagers and adults.

I think that mini-skirts are designed to stir up lust in men. Regardless of leggings. I would NEVER allow my daughter to wear one under my roof.
In women’s dress they should be considerate of men. A mini-skirt on a teenager should be discouraged because of the unfair lust they would stir up in fellow teenagers thoughts, and I certainly would discourage teens wearing them by the amount of rape-deaths you hear about on tv, not to scare you or anything but this is something that a parent should be aware of and protective of their children.

A rapist is not going to determine his victim because of her outfit. And a normal man is not going to turn into a rapist by seeing a girl in a short skirt.😦

I certainly hope that you have taught your daughter other ways to protect herself from being a potential victim of a violent crime than just prohibiting what she can wear. And a teenager can still stir up lustful thoughts in their peers by their actions and not just by what they wear. There is more to being modest than just the clothes one chooses.

I actually wear leggings under my skirts quite often, but more because I think they are cute than because I’m wearing miniskirts! They do help me keep up with my toddler more easily in skirts, too, because they allow me to wear cute just-above-the-knee skirts and dresses without worrying that I’m showing more than I’d like when I run around after him. I think they can be a great addition to a wardrobe.

However, if leggings are worn as pants or under miniskirts, I really don’t think they are any more modest than just showing the skin, because they cling so tightly!

As a mom of a 3 and almost 2 yrs old girls we have to have our girls wear leggings. All the toddler skirts are so short, and we sure don’t want their bottoms showing.
