another thing to take into account, besides actual coverage, is the rear-view, and the fabric itself. It is my firm belief that if most women saw what they looked like from the rear in pants or shorts without proper foundation garments, they would never wear anything but dresses. Sheer fabric shirts are “in” again, so It would depend on what you wear under it.

As long as the top does not expose the midriff or is too tight or revealing. Shorts, of course, should not be skin tight either.
I agree with this. Especially at my age- midriff would not only be immodest, it would be gross.😃

I don’t understand why people don’t just swim nude.

Seriously, what is our problem with nudity? It’s what God gave you, right? Why not be proud of it? Why is it something to be ashamed of?
I’m not ashamed. I just don’t think everyone needs to, or wants to, see what I have. --KCT

😛 I have seen my rear in pants (mirrors are wonderful things). It’s why I have worn nothing but skirts and dresses for years!

Me in pants is a spiritual experience. Folks cry “OMG!” and run away.😃

We are talking everyday at home clothing, right?
I wear tanks around the house and for yard work.

It amazes me that people never address male immodest dress.
Probably because women see men differently than men see women when it comes to modesty and chaste thoughts. Personally, I am WAY more distracted by an attractive man who dresses well (nice suit, or dress trousers with a beautiful starched shirt and nice shoes - yowza!!) 😊 . A guy in shorts and flip flops doesn’t do much for me - sorry. But a man who knows how to dress well can absolutely turn my head. 🤷 Modesty has nothing to do with it in this situation.

Ok, I’m a homosexual man, who is living a chaste life and i’m still a man. I would NOT do a double take of a man in a suit, but might be tempted by a guy in shorts, flip-flops and a tanktop.

I am very visual. I think men and woman are different for sure about this matter.

Maybe they should have a epsoide of “What Not to Wear” for church!

I think the main thing is whatever ya wear, it should fit well. Even those shorts, or a suit, dress or clingly fabric. And remember just because its the latest thing, doesnt mean one should buy it. 😃

I was thinking of that priest who doesnt want to upset the youth. There was a visiting Pastor, fresh and overly eager out of school and he tackled that in church one day. I thought the regular Pastor was going to crawl under the carpet. It became so “over the top” it unfortunetely became almost hysterical. But everyone remained calm and understanding,

Especially the girls in the second row, who really were not dressed so bad, I think they forgave him actually. He was just starting. However I wonder what the regular Pastor said after. . . .🙂

Praise God for His Goodness! Congrats on coming Back!
Exalt,
You are speaking from your own understanding and not from what the Church teaches.

You might want to read the following link:

What is the Catholic Church position regarding those who practice nudism?

I used to be a nudist before i came back to the Church. I used to think what do i have to hide? I think this thinking is wrong now. It’s hard not to find social nudism sexually frustrating. Modesty has it’s place and we need to be aware of that.

Love in Christ,
Joseph

Just wanted to say, may God bless you in your life of chastity. It can’t be easy.

Seconded.

And to all those men out there who say that they don’t need to worry about clothing modesty because women aren’t visual (which is a load of bunk, IMO, and a cop-out), well, consider that you may be causing good men such as Joseph Michael to stumble. 😦

First, I’d like to thank lizaanne for her support. I think there are more of us out here in the Catholic Church than one might believe. All people are called to a life of chastity and it’s not easy for any of us in this day and age.

Second, SeekerJen, it’s good to hear that a woman agrees with me and that men need to be aware of what they wear.

Happy 4th of July, God bless our troops fighting for FREEDOM!

I’m in the “modest enough” rank. Modest enough for Mass, that is.

I have several thoughts on modesty…

First, there is an inherent injustice to the dignity of persons in fashions. Women are expected to bare as much flesh as possible, but men are allowed to both stay covered and be comfortable. (Think about figure skaters. Ever seen Brian Boitano in a skin-tight, skimpy top and tights?) I think it’s just another aspect of the objectification of women.

2.) A man doesn’t have to wear a speedo (yuck!) for me to be able to “undress him with my eyes.” But I’m blessed; I’ve been married to “Mr. Right” for 10 happy years, and “custody of the eyes” is easy for me.

In the case of women, though… that fashion for showing off one’s underwear does distract me, easily! (As well as the display of love handles, etc.)

It’s not sexual. I have a spirit of destructive criticism which is all too easily awakened; also a spirit of compassion whose voice is a **lot **quieter. The first says, “She’s dressed like a slut! How dare she come to Mass like that!?!” The second says, “Oh, my dear, I’m sorry you have bought in to the fashions that put your body on display like a piece of meat.” … I’m able to keep my mouth shut on the criticism, but I haven’t yet been able to voice the other one.

3.) Some girls in my parish have amended the “show your underwear” fashion by wearing a pristine white “a-shirt,” form-fitting but not skin-tight, over their underwear and under the revealing shirt. I applaud this. I might not wear that myself (ROFL - fat chance! I’m 55 and obese), but it does say, “I can be fashionable without revealing my bra or breasts.”

Also, our ideas of modesty change with the environment. I’m thinking of the beach. A modest two-piece bathing suit that completely covers the “naughty bits” and a little beyond would be OK at the beach, but not at a restaurant.

Last, but not least, there are two points of view about how to dress for Mass. One is to honor our Lord by wearing our best. The other is to wear what’s comfortable, because we’re with family, so to speak.

Your sister in Christ,

Ruthie

Ruthie, I agree with you except on the figure skating thing. I don’t know if you’ve seen some of the men’s skating “pants” that are thankfully not as popular now but used to be ubiquitous. They were tights at best, and left very little to the imagination. Since there are so many gay men and young girls in figure skating, I imagine that any who wished to keep chaste found it extremely difficult to maintain custody of the eyes.

And yes, I do like the long tank tops (a-shirts?) that are widely available now. I use them quite regularly as undershirts, both to cover any necessary bits left uncovered by trendy shirts, and to add an extra layer to further hide my underwear from view. 👍

What about the whatever its called style. with guys hanging their pants below their boxers? I saw one guy with his belt just below his buttocks, and he shuffled. I think its silly, but I imagine there are some who think it sexy.

Or is it the guys way to combat all the underware showing by girls ??

Or because just how does one “shock” the generation who swam nude at woodstock? Thats a hard act to follow. 🤷

I never thought this was sexy. I was opposed to it when i was living in lust. But, now i appreciate it because it is not sexy and is usually covered by long baggy tee shirts. It’s better than skin tight jeans, which i see a lot of girls wearing. Thankfully that doesn’t bother my libido.

Also, i think it was started by the guys in the first place. I am referring to the very baggy jeans that hang down so low and are covered by long baggy tee shirts.

Actually guys have gotten more into covering up than women these days, which is good for me. I wear baggy jeans myself, but they don’t hang down low around my butt.
