Right now, for some reason, I’ve been concerned about modesty because the Bible talks about it, but I’m confused on what exactly is modest and immodest. So what about swimsuits? I wear 1 piece/ tankinis; should that be modest enough?

My wife wears a swimsuit that looks like a one piece, but is actually the top with a pair of nylon shorts. It’s pretty modest, I think.

I’ve seen “modest” swimsuits being sold, but they are SO expensive. And no matter how much my swim suit costs, they all get old and stretched within a month. So I can’t afford to buy a $100 swimsuit every single month. Any other ideas, or maybe how to modify existing ones easily (I can’t sew)

I just bought a standard tank suit at Walmart for $14. The legs aren’t very high-cut (my husband says that they should be higher  ) and it covers all that needs covering. And at that price, it would be no big deal to replace it monthly. I’ve also seen little swim skirts that could be worn over a standard suit- Victoria’s Secret even sells them. I just received a sale catalog from that store, and they’ve got a line with tank tops, bottoms, and the little skirts, all matching (I think it’s Body by Victoria). I’m thinking of purchasing a set because the pieces are so cute.

I know how you feel about swimsuits. I was at the beach this week and I was the only young female not in a bikini, but I’m just not comfortable wearing something that is essentially a bra and panties in front of a bunch of strangers (and even less so in front of friends and family). The tankini suits seem like a much better option, IMO.

I’m very happy to see the rise of the tankini! I’m not much of a water person, so I don’t really go swimming that often that I need to go swimsuit swimming about once a decade.

I’ve been looking at the swimsuit seperates at Wal-Mart, since I’ve managed to maintain my size four weight for three years now, so I might invest in an inexpensive suit, “just in case.” I’ve been looking at the tankinis…I was thinking a tank style top with the boy style shorts. Much better then the skimpy bikinis…too much skin!

I do like the tankini - the coverage is much better. Covering myself is not as much of an issue. I went shopping for a swimsuit with one of my college-age daughters today - ugh, there’s a battle!

As a man, it’s refreshing to here women having a positive discussion on modesty. 👍
I know we men are to strengthen our conscience in the light of Christ in order not to lust, but there are so many women today that would rather us not.
So I say “thank you”.

Yes that’s fine.

I like the tankini too. Not only is the coverage better, but it’s much more convenient, as top and bottom are separate. But a skirt covering the bottom of a one piece I think is also an awesome idea, I’m going to try it I think.

I want to add a few words of encouragement as well. There was a time when modesty was more highly valued. The one piece bathing suit is best. The two piece, depending on cut, tends to look like underwear and no woman I know of wants to be seen in public like that.

The bikini is less than underwear, and the th*ng is thoroughly disgusting. I do not go to beaches anymore since I don’t want to see women in underwear much less that thing I mentioned.

There is such a thing as beauty but young girls are constantly encouraged to show as much skin as possible. Certainly, the desired effect has nothing to do with modesty. There is a difference between a beautiful woman with self-respect and clothing that is more common for street walkers.

Catholic women, don’t take your cues from the secular world.

Ed

In some culture, people don’t even dare to wear swimsuits in public. 😃

I prefer the tankini to the one piece because it’s a lot more comfortable. I also really like the bathing suits where the bottoms look like little shorts with the tank top. More coverage feels a lot more modest to me. Thankfully, they are finally having bathing suits that cover up, but also don’t make you look like you took it from your grandmother’s wardrobe. ha!

I went to buy my pre-teen daughter a swimsuit at Target (she wears adult sizes now). All the swimsuits, or so I thought, where grouped together near the entrance and were very immodest. Then as we are walking past the work out clothes and PJ’s near the back corner of the store I noticed the modest swimsuits and we bought one.

Last weekend I went to JC Penny to find a new suit. My old one was a simple tank that zipped up the front, but I started feeling too exposed around the leg opening area, if you get my drift. So I found the CUTEST swim dress!!! It has little spaghetti straps, then is straight across the top (neckline), then it just looks like a little dress with princess seams, and a slightly flared skirt. It is black with tiny white dots all over, and a tiny white loopy trim at the neckline. It was $68 - but I feel comfortable in it and not exposed, so it was worth it.

Oh - and it has attached bottom shorts with low cut leg openings and body colored from the waist up, so if it floats up it looks like you have separate pants, but you are still covered. A very well made suit.

I get my beach wear from sporting goods stores. I buy a Takini-type top and skorts (like kind that you see the tennis players wearing). It’s pricier, but so far the swimwear from there has lasted me 3 years (and the pieces still look like new).

It’s nice to see everyone so concerned about finding modest swimwear. I wish more people thought the same way. But at the same time its important not to automatically assume that everyone wearing a bikini is trying to be immodest. Two-piece suits for women have become the standard and many women wear them just to fit in without giving much thought to it. Modesty isn’t an absolute measure, it’s based on the standards of the culture one is in. For example, we’d all be guilty of immodesty if we were suddenly transported to Victorian England.

Another example is that in Europe many men wear speedos instead of the swimming trunks we’re used to. I really doubt this is because men in Europe are purposely trying to show off as much of their bodies as they possibly can. I think it’s more of a culture thing and for some reason their styles of mens swimsuits evolved differently than ours.

But all that being said, it would be nice if a greater sense of modesty returned to America.

I’ve got 3 old ones that get fuzzed up because in aquasize when I work against the side of the pool they get ripped up. they still fit okay so I got nylon shorts at target to wear over them. these were only about $8, swim shorts can go as high as $25, but all the catalogs have sales right now. wal-mart had catalina brand suits on sale today for 14.88, Another thing to check about the fit, besides the legs and the cleavage, is the underarm–is too much breast exposed there as well (also does your back fat pudge up too much).

The Bible tells Christians not to conform to this world. “Fitting in” is not important. Evolved? Who evolved swimwear?
