Modest swimwear as an example for my daughter

Serap, I don’t mean to be rude, offensive or domineering but, I don’t think those are modest at all. In fact, I cringe at the idea that a Saint Therese or a Saint Gemma would wear such a dress to go swimming. They have a very low neckline, very short skirts and, well, I’m surprised that you even said that you wanted them to be ‘sexy’…

There is a diffirence between looking beautiful and sexy; there is no need to dress in a sexual manner in order to look beauitful. For me, a modest swimsuit should cover most of the thighs, either with a skirt or by ‘stockings’.

Also, without portraying you as a bad woman Serap:), but why would you want your daughter to be ‘sexy’? Its just wrong. Our bad culture sexualizes children and manipulates them against themselves and virtue with all these silly fads and fashions. My suggestion is that you don’t take your daughter swimming at all!👍

I’m kidding here! But those dresses just aren’t modest. I think that if the neckline was higher, and the skirt was longer (if possible reaching just a small bit under the knees), with the armpits and 1/4 of the arms covered, they would truly be fine and modest .

May Mary bless you Serap! Your love for your childre and family is very clear:).
I do see where you are coming from. No, I don’t desire to be sexy…bad choice of words. I do however, wish to be feminine.

Thanks for getting your message to me and remaining kind…something really needed on CAF:thumbsup:

Feminine? FEMININE?! Woman, don’t you know that man are better? Accept that!

Ok, I’m really joking there:). Woman have to be strong and all that and of course they must be feminine and not act like men. Pope Benedict XV (the 15th) said that girls in order to appear beautiful must not reveal their sexual or carnal side but must show a spiritual side of their beauty. This does not mean that they have to dress all in black like the puritans obviously; in fact, there is nothing wrong for girls to dress elegantly and beautifully (but not in an exeggerated way so as to not seem pompous) or to even wear jewellry. Zelie Martin the mother of Saint Therese of Lisieux is said to have loved seeing her children so finely dressed, and the day before she entered into the Carmelites, Maria Teresita Quevedo’s friend was surprised at seeing her dressed so elegantly. ‘What can I say?’, Teresita said: ‘I love dressing elegantly, but I’m going to give it all up for Jesus and Mary!’ She was also an expert swimmer.

welcome to CAF by the way. You will see for yourself that there’s a lot of judging in CAF.

Serap,

I like your swimsuit options…my wife wears one similar very to those, and yes, I think she looks sexy in it (while looking modest of course).

Awww, those are all really cute. I think it’s important to feel comfortable in what you’re wearing, and if those make you feel beautiful and feminine, go for it! 👍

I personally prefer bikinis to one pieces. Living 2 miles away from the beach in Florida, and originally being from the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, I’ve had nothing but experience with beach, swimming, sunshine, hot weather, and water lol. And I LOVE it all!

Feeling the sun and breeze and water against the skin is actually amazing, and I can’t quite do that with big one pieces. And besides, I don’t like the way they stick to my body when wet… making me hotter on a really hot day, and colder on a day that isn’t as warm as ideal. Not to mention the killer tan lines and having a pale belly when my extremities are brown! Lol.

I’ve pretty much worn bikinis my whole life and I feel comfortable in them and don’t feel there is anything wrong with them. I think we can all agree that dress has a lot to do with culture, and the culture that has always surrounded me has always accepted bikinis as proper swimming attire for the beach or the pool.

Hope you enjoy your time new swimwear and your time in the sun! 🙂

I respect what you wrote. I read Michelle Arnold’s post that bikinis are immodest, but I get what you are saying too. When I was in the Bahamas, after a couple of days, I didn’t even notice what swimwear a woman was wearing. I honestly didn’t care and it wasn’t a big deal…well except for the topless woman I saw. My husband looked at her and laughed b/c she was trying so hard to get attention and she was an older “cougar” type.

I don’t feel comfortable in a bikini. Also, after having two kids, I just feel floppy in my tummy and don’t want to show it anymore. My butt also got kinda flatter and wider after having kids, so I want to hide it too :o I go to the gym 4 times a week and my body looks great…it’s all in my head (so my husband says).

I also feel kinda naked in a bikini to be truthful. I feel like I need to cover myself in fig leaves or something 😃 I feel more beautiful in my swimdresses, so I do what’s comfortable for me. I also noticed that I got a lot of smiles from men in the Bahamas and they were saying hi to me as I walked by. I guess it’s b/c I was so covered up and it wasn’t as intimidating to them…and perhaps their wives/girlfriends wouldn’t have smacked them across the head LOL!! 😃

My husband also tells me that I look gorgeous in my swimdresses and he admires my figure in them when I wear them.

That’s just me. I personally feel that bikinis are immodest (for me), but Debora, if we went to the Bahamas together and you were wearing a bikini, I honestly wouldn’t bat an eye b/c it’s also not that big of a deal when 95% of the women are also wearing bikinis. I guess after a day or two, you just get desensitized to it.🤷

Haha, awwwww good for you! I’m sure you do look really nice in your swimwear.

I too read what Michelle wrote, and honestly, it made me kinda angry. What some people don’t realize is that modesty is all relative and it greatly depends on culture and where you are. Who are we to say that a certain article of clothing is universally immodest no matter who we are, where we are, or what the culture of that particular place is?? It’s all relative.

Back in the day when women were covered up from neck to foot, men used to get aroused by simply catching a glimpse of a girl’s ankles!

… And yet we have indigenous tribes where women walk around completely topless all day and the men don’t think anything of it.

I think it is wrong to say that women cannot wear bikini’s, period. Especially because that isn’t even a Catholic rule!

I’m glad you understand this concept though, and didn’t lecture me or anything. You get it, and you’re cool.

That’s so awesome that you went to the Bahamas! I occasionally also see a topless women at the beach when I go back to Rio for a visit. I think being topless or wearing a thong to that beach is indecent because it is not considered decent attire in that culture (unlike in some indigenous tribes) …But bikinis are considered the normal, appropriate attire both in Brazil and here in Florida, so no problem there!

Open prayer and honest discernment is what a woman should engage in when deciding what she will wear and where she will wear it.

I honestly believe that when a woman says that being topless is ok…she hasn’t sincerely prayed to discern what God wants of her.

Do you really want to look like this on the beach? This is 2011!

I wear a swim dress/one piece bathing suit with a little skirt attacted. My husband thinks it is lady like and very sexy on me. Plus, I go swimming with my grand daughter at least once a week and want to set a good example for her.

Serap, I was in no way refering to you. I just thought so many people are so hung up on modesty. I think there is nothing wrong with what people want to wear. I think some go to extremes however. I personally see nothing wrong with bikinis or other times of swimwear. It just drives me crazy when others try to impose their so-called modesty police on me. Thats all! No harm intended!:):):)🙂

Well you’ve seen my swimdress and I’ve been told by my dad’s wife that it’s too conservative and I should wear a two piece. Other’s on CAF have said it’s not conservative enough.

It’s just comfortable for me is all. It’s modest for me and I think it’s a good for my DD to see also. Who wants their mom to look like a hoochie mama anyway LOL.

This is the reason I don’t like swimming lol… because I can’t ever think of anything to wear! My swimwear back in the day, before I was Catholic, was not very modest :o but I want to change that… I’m only considering wearing a one piece bathing suit or “tankini”, no bikinis, no plunging neckline either. It’s hard to find anything in stores though. One option is to get more of an “athletic” style swimsuit (they tend to cover up more), and wear that with shorts.

I tried looking up some swimsuits online that looked more modest…

modestkini.com/?m=detay&urun=202
bestmodelgallery.my-php.net/gallery/modest+swimsuits-3239 (this one is plus size but I can picture anyone wearing it, plus size or no 🙂 I would make the skirt part a bit longer though)

too bad almost all the girls my age wear bikini’s… but I’d rather stand out on the beach than be immodest, if it came to that

the swimsuits in the OP are nice, I would just make the neckline higher… 🙂 but I like the general idea

go on line and find Swimwear Place. It ships to the U.S. and it’s very affordable. They have lots of fashionable modest swimwear.

Can’t please everybody, right? Haha 🙂

Don’t let anyone tell you it’s not conservative enough, bc they have no basis to speak from. The CC purposely gives us no specific dress code to follow bc she understands that it is a matter of culture. And by our culture’s standards, your choice of swimsuits definitely are more than conservative enough.

Don’t let people tell you it’s “too conservative” either. So what if it is? If YOU feel comfortable and beautiful in it, more power to you! 👍

People are just ridiculous, I tell ya…

*Not to rain on this thread but I do not know that I consider these modest. Yes I understand that they are not bikini’s but they still show a deep plunging neckline and if I am not mistaken the skirt is shorter than a mini skirt. I would not “feel” comfortable in these even if I did have a perfect body.😃
I personally have tried all sorts of swim suits (except a bikini) and I still can not help but “feel” like I am in my underwear. :o
I was finally able to find a swim suite that I “feel” comfortable in and it is made out of the same material that swimsuits are normally made of and the best thing I do not “feel” like I am in my undies. My husband, bless his soul, let me spend the money from some of our tax refund to purchase it.
Now I have to get used to comments from little children like “how come you are swimming in your clothes.” 🤷
So Since I found this thread I thought I would post the link with pictures of them and get some feed back.

Do you think these are too modest?

Here is the link: hydrochic.com/shop-swim-bottoms.html*
I consider myself to be quite modest in my attire, but I have to say, I don’t see anything wrong with a regular bathing suit. As long as you’re not traipsing around the supermarket, or anything. Even some bikinis aren’t too bad, as long as you have sufficient coverage, as one poster commented. How on earth do you swim with all that clothing on? And what about a really hazy, hot and humid day. Isn’t that amount of clothing uncomfortable?

I belong to a swim club and I live in my bathing suit all summer. Although I do not wear bikinis, I have worn them in the past when I was a little thinner. I don’t see anything wrong with wearing a bathing suit in the appropriate arena. It’s not like I saunter out to my car in front of all my neighbors in my bathing suit. I wear a cover up until I get to my destination. But once I’m at my destination, I’m all about the even tan and comfortable swimming gear!

There are 300 people at the swim club. All 300 people are wearing bathing suits. Heavy people, skinny people, young people, old people, tall people, short people. It is totally normal. There’s a time and place for everything - even bathing suits.

THANK YOU, for saying that. 🙂

THANK YOU, for saying that. 🙂
I hope I didn’t sound argumentative, because that certainly wasn’t my intention. I was just trying to stress that I see 300 (or so) people all summer long who wear traditional swimsuits and it never once occurred to me to think they were sleazy or setting a bad example. I was just a little perplexed by the general consensus on this thread.

Of course, if someone feels more comfortable in suits with more coverage, then that’s what they should wear. I’m not saying that everyone has to wear traditional suits.

Okay, I’ll stop babbling now. 😃

I just purchased two very pretty modest swimdresses that I think are a good compromise between modest and fashionable. They are feminine and yet modest; not too old looking so I won’t feel like a grandma on the beach 😛

What do you guys think? In some ways, I think that they are more sexy than a bikini b/c they leave more to the imagination 😉
I LOVE those!!! I realize those are examples from last year, and you probably have them still. But I’d love to see if you’re wearing anything different this year cuz yer so fashionable 🙂

And thanks for the tip on Swimwear Place. My mom has been begging me to open the pool and have a pool party, but I’ve only been in it literally three times in five years because I don’t have anything that I like to wear. Yeah, sometimes I feel like a stick in the mud, but I’m too busy to do things I don’t like to do 😛 But I think I might just open the pool this year!!!

I already see something I like at Swimwear Place 🙂
