Modest swimwear for women

This is a really good question, one that I’ve really been thinking about of late…

I’m 18 years old and live in Australia, so basically you can imagine what my situation is like. The beach is the place to be…all through summer…and believe me no one covers up!

I’ve been in two minds as to whether or not to dress modestly at the beach, considering that bikinis or tankinis are simply the culture here in Australia.

I was chatting to one of my guy friends about this and he said that although it is a fact of life seeing girls in bikinis etc. he said that it was a really nice and almost refreshing to see a girl who actually covers up. He was also saying that he looks to his Catholic group of friends for that chance of being able to speak to a girl without getting distracted…

His words gave me a lot of encouragement, I have always dressed modestly but thought it may not really be worth it. I see modesty as a kind of mission for Catholics in this day and age, to live in the world but not of the world. So to dress in a “trendy” way but still in a way that flatters, complements and overall brings about the true beauty of womanhood with revealing what needs to be protected, for it is precious.

CCC 2522. Modesty protects the mystery of persons and their love. It encourages patience and moderation in loving relationships; it requires that the conditions for the definitive giving and commitment of man and woman to one another be fulfilled. Modesty is decency. It inspires ones choice of clothing. It keeps silence or reserve where there is evident risk of unhealthy curiosity. It is descreet.

We as Catholics have to be different…in a good way 🙂

I have bought a nice rash shirt, one that fits really well and is extremely comfortable to wear, it cost me a fair bit of money but is worth it. I also wear shorts. People would probably say they are too short, but I can say they are still modest and also give me the chance to swim properly without being pulled back by knee length boardies, (I like to go surfing so it’s definitely a must to have a bathers that actually fit and can help me to swim rather than pull me back).

These are just my thoughts, I still think it is important for the rule of modesty to be kept at a beach/pool setting. People’s temptations and feelings do not change depending on the situation, something like modesty needs to be kept up across the board.

Also, I fully agree that guys need to be modest as well…my guy friends have started wearing rashies and boardies because of this 🙂

looking forward to hearing from some more people!!! 😃

So those swimsuits look very nice, but they aren’t lust inspiring in other words they are perfect

I’ve always thought these places had cute swimwear too.

I really like this one from Mod Cloth, may have to consider it for post-baby, seems like it would hide any extra flab well

Soo beautiful on the Mod Cloth!
I wish I could buy one of those…
In my part of the world Ive never seen such pretty swim suits 🙂

These definitely aren’t bargain buys (they run $138 - $346) but if any of you are like me, you’re willing to pay a premium for style! These are definitely a cut above the standard “tank suit” and might just convince me to finally give up my bikinis. 😊
$300 for a swimsuit

I’m looking for a nude beach :rotfl:

I think I’ll stick with my $20.00 Walmart Tank Suit with matching skirt or shorts.

LOL @ Lost Wanderer! 🙂

One time, while sailing with my father, our boat capsized AND his life jacket zipper broke. He had to alternate between treading water and clinging to the boat for approx 6 hours while waiting for a rescue boat to find us. We were lucky–it could have been days before we were found.

Because of this, I will not engage in water sports while wearing clothing that would prevent me from treading water indefinitely. Honestly, I’m pretty sure anything that is truly “modest” would be unsafe.
You can always take off clothes if you have to get in the water and modest clothing can really come in handy for flotation or protection from the elements and sea life. Treading water isn’t ideal because it will move heat away from your body and decrease your survival time. Not related at all to modesty, simply FYI 🙂

Those are adorable!!! I love them all!

I bought myself 2 cute little swimdresses that are very feminine and fashionable at the same time, while being modest.

I am tall and slim and could definitely still look good in a bikini 👍

Swimdresses are very popular in Australia and the like b/c of the sun being so strong. I found some gorgeous swimdresses on line that are very beautiful looking. Modest swimwear is becoming more and more popular.

A one piece does not necessarily make it modest. The cut of the crotch is no better than a two piece.
That’s not what Michelle Arnold said in the AAA, so as Catholics, we are not held to your opinion…Thanks be to God for that 😃

In my fallible, teen, hormone driven male opinion, I believe that the best way for a woman to know whether or not she is dressed modestly is specifically by paying attention to how people look at her. Do they look at her eyes or constantly find themselves fidgeting and looking away as to not make it seem like they’re looking at her chest?

Exposed cleavage can easily be very distracting, despite what many people say about “self control”. Self control doesn’t change the fact that there is an elephant in front of my face, now does it?

It might also be in your best interest to evaluate the reasons as to why you are dressed the way you are. Are you exposing more of yourself than you need to because it makes you feel better about yourself? Perhaps you are dressing the way you are for incongruous reasons. Different cultures have different standards of modesty. If you aren’t dressed up like a cardboard box in some places, you might be surprised to find people calling you a Jezebel.

So all in all, I think a 2 piece suit CAN be modest, but it depends on the way the suit has been made and how it accentuates your endowments, on top of how you carry yourself. If God has blessed you with a bountiful bosom (if you will) or an ample bottom (ahem), it would likely be in your best interest to not wear something that over accentuates features, given their intrinsic sexual natures. (For many people)

That is my opinion.

As a Catholic, above all, you are representing your faith in God everywhere you go, which includes the beach. So the next time you think about winking at cute lil’ Johnny in his summer-shorts, think about how it makes you look.

You know, I find that men check me out a lot simply b/c I’m pretty. I am not dressed immodestly, but men still do look quite a bit.

Just like I check out a man, simply b/c he’s handsome and it has nothing to do with the way he is dressed.

I do know what you are saying though. One can at least make the effort to be modest…they are then doing their part.

LOL! Wonderful, I agree totally. Now please do me a favor and tell men to put shirts on or something instead of putting their chests in my face! Thanks!!!

Tell me about it. Men seem to think that they are off the hook 🤷

You tell them. The people you know are not who I know…

Unless of course… You’re stalking me…

I feel ya… It doesn’t matter what I wear either. I mean, you put this much charm, wit, and raw animal magnetism in one package and some women (or men!!) are going to lust after it. dressing modestly isn’t nearly as easy as it might seem when you’re this handsome. :sigh:… with great power comes great responsibility I suppose.

LOL! LOL! well, you seemed to address the women of the world in your previous post about modesty, so i was hoping you could address the men of the world as well.

peace

Modesty is about protecting chastity, and focusing on the dignity of a person.

That said, what makes a swimsuit or a piece of clothing modest?

(We are actually doing a Catholic radio show on this on Thurs.)

In my experience, it is tough for women to understand how something like a bare back or exposed thigh can do something to a man, but it’s true.

Let me make an analogy:

Ladies, say you were dating a man, and starting to get serious, and one day he came up to you, smiled, leaned into your ear and whispered “I love you”. After that, he didn’t say it again. Would you be able to just stop thinking about it, or ignore it?

In the same way, when a man sees something like a “sneak preview” of a woman’s naked body, that’s not going to be something he can just “will away” necessarily. Even the man practicing celibate chastity still has a normal, human sex drive.

Why do we look at how much we can get away with showing, rather than how much we can nurture others’ eternal souls by guarding their hearts and their eyes?

I definitely think that men need to take a good look at what we do, too, and how we portray ourselves physically. Walking around trying to show off muscles and abs can also tempt some women.

I would say some clear guidelines though for women should include:
  • no cleavage or exposure of ANY part of the breast
  • nothing that goes higher than a credit card length above the knee
  • no entirely-exposed backs (naked back makes man think of naked front, etc.)
Now, things like this will likely disturb some ladies to read, especially if they are good, Christian women striving to uphold modesty. However, if more men would step up and be honest about what “starts their engine”, so to speak, we would be able to make significant progress in our inter-gender dialogue.

Ladies, I don’t mean to offend you, and I know it’s emotional to think about having to change a wardrobe or shop differently, but I am not some guy who is uber-conservative and wants things to be like the 1800s, either.

I am just a man striving for holiness, and I am a weak man, so it becomes essential for me to stand up for these values for myself and for others. I am certain that readers seeking to truly uphold these good, Catholic values will at least humbly put aside emotion for a moment, and attempt to prayerfully consider these things.

I just intended this thread to provide a link to some less revealing swimwear. However, I just have to point out that some men are turned on by pantyhose. Should I avoid wearing dresses/skirts? Some men are turned on by children. Should I hide my children in my house until they are 18? Etc etc. I’m not going out of my way to make others’ path to holiness more difficult, but every one needs to take responsibility for his own path to holiness, rather than asking others to constantly accommodate his weaknesses.
