So often the “modesty” and “chastity” conversations tend to devolve into what women should and shouldn’t wear. Can I get some concrete ideas from women on what men need to be doing/saying – or not doing/saying – to be more “modest” toward women? Or is that a topic for another thread?
I honestly don’t know. My attraction to men is 80% personality and 20% appearance.

"The short answer to the bathing suit issue is that men ought to wear long, loose-fitting suit-shorts (as most men currently do), which don’t reveal pubic hair and butt cracks (having nothing to do with women’s chastity, just because it’s disgusting), as well as shirts that do not “draw attention” to their physiques (that is, are not skin-tight) and, at a minimum, cover their shoulders. Yes, I just said men should not go shirtless at the beach – precisely because there are some women who respond to physical appearance the way most men do. They are psychologically healthy women who happen to have a stronger reaction to physical stimuli than do most women, who can become sexually aroused and have lustful thoughts very quickly in reaction to seeing a guy with a “hot” body. And men must be respectful of that and act accordingly to not move them – knowingly or unknowingly, inadvertent or intentional – toward that occasion of sin. "–PursuingTruth

THANK YOU!!!
Great post! Women can be turned on by a guy too— keep yourself covered up men!

This is my version of a modest bathing suit:

http://modestswimmingsuits.com/images/modest_swimming_suits3.jpg

Crotch and butt are hidden by a slight skirt that isn’t bulky, while the top is not horribly skin tight (nothing wrong with showing some curves— like in this picture) and the boobs are not popping out. The top should have straps (water will pull the top down-- its happened to me before).

I’ve worn bikinis for most of my life, but now that I’ll be married soon I can’t imagine showing off that amount of my body to other people. But that’s just me— people can have different opinions.

(Also besides deciding if a swimsuit is modest, I think we should also be concerned how much $$$ we’re paying for a swimsuit. Some people would pay way too much for a bathing suit!)

I think that if a person is at the beach or a public swim place then they ought to be prepared to see body parts that they might find attractive. Men or women should keep custody of their own eyes and mind or else avoid the place altogether.
👍👍

👍 This suit is modest, functional, and doesn’t look like a set of “Little House on the Prairie bloomers”!

This is really cute! 🙂

Angelic Rose - that is pretty much exactly what I have been looking for!

Why does the issue of what swimsuit women wear always get judged on the standard of what men are looking at. For me it is what I feel comfortable in. I tend to stay fairly covered up anyways, though I have no particular modesty concerns, I’m just a private person.

Going swimming with other people and having to choose between wearing a skin tight outfit that leaves my thighs fully exposed or something horribly frumpy means that I just don’t go. I know on one hand I should get over being so self-concious, but I’d really rather find something that I could just go and be comfortable in.

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

“2521 Purity requires modesty, an integral part of temperance. Modesty protects the intimate center of the person. It means refusing to unveil what should remain hidden.”

This is why women should heed Christian mens’ (name removed by moderator)ut when it comes to suits. Because when you wear something in public, it isn’t about your personal view or your intention to/not arouse. It is about love, revealed to us in Christ.

Would the Virgin Mary want to “get away” with showing as much as she could? I understand that fashion is a driving force in this society, but are we so stuck on vanity and our own look that we have grown heartless to damaging our brothers and sisters in Christ?

“Modesty protects the intimate center of the person. It means refusing to unveil what should remain hidden.”

This implies that we have an obligation to protect one another, and to hide that which should be hidden. Please, ladies, help reverse the cycle of damage and destruction that our culture is wreaking, and lead the way into a better place for all of us.

"2522 Modesty protects the mystery of persons and their love. It encourages patience and moderation in loving relationships; it requires that the conditions for the definitive giving and commitment of man and woman to one another be fulfilled. Modesty is decency. It inspires one’s choice of clothing. It keeps silence or reserve where there is evident risk of unhealthy curiosity. It is discreet. " (CCC 2522, emphasis added)

Sincerely,

A Brother in Christ

That is Really Amazing news about Swimwear for Women. There are many reasons that you’re being wise when you choose to purchase sunsets separates for your bathing suit wardrobes and not the least of which is making your fashion budget stretch as far as possible. Sunsets Separates

I just wear a rash guard and board shorts over a regular swim suit. I have my children do the same. It also teaches them sun safety.

I gotta say. Not bad, not bad… and this is coming from a guy who’s often apprehensive towards threads like this. Those one-pieces are actually kind cute. :o
To be fair, those can be very cute and lovely. 🙂
