I wear shorts to the beach but speedos when I swim laps. I really don’t want or expect anyone to be attracted to me but I am combatting the idea that there is something “gross” about the male body which is the root of an awful lot of people’s discomfort with them.

To my surprise, though, in ten years I’ve hardly gotten a dirty look of either kind. Just a few giggles from kids.

maybe your understanding me or maybe not.In the first place I never said missionaries forced tribes to dress more modestly. As the missionaries became accepted they suggested or would supply clothing that covered more.I said that since man since his intellect was dulled. He was less able to discern right from wrong. He reverted to his baser instincts. We live in a more civilized society.Until recently we realized that modesty was a virtue, the human body should be respected. It should be holy.

In respect of the bare breasts of Africa, the African men in those societies are at a loss to understand that western men are at all affected by what a woman has for the benefit of the babies.

I’d suggest that when missionaries get them to cover up it has to do with modesty of a different culture being imposed on the locals.

Do you believe your doctor is better able to diagnose a partivular illness you have than you are?

(name removed by moderator): the illness man conceived was the blindness to discern good from evil.Evil proceeds from his original sin inherited through his first parent.

Im not really understanding your logic. it seems to me that according to you since a certian style of dress is a cultures norm it can not be immodest.
Well our cultures norm of dress now seems to be women dressing in tight pants, cleavage showing etc… so once this style becomes even more accpeted and the cultural norm we can no longer say its immodest.

(name removed by moderator): A Catholic missionary’s main job is to tend to the spiritual part of man since the soul is immortal and therefore of most importance. However he doesn’t ignore the physical part of man either since they are together taken to be 2 parts of a whole.A man sick in body cannot reach his true potential spiritually because the mind needs physical nourishment to function properly.one may say that modesty in dress is just a small part of making an individual a total human being.Brushing one’s teeth and keeping clean are small parts.Modesty in dress helps to protect the spiritual health. An unclad native and can bring about undesirable temptations to other members.

Your wrong. Much of this ‘culture’ recognizes absolutely nothing wrong with the type of dressing described. This is why it is so common.

I think it’s fine in those cases because they weren’t done with the intent of provoking lust.

You have it backwards. The wider culture as a whole has no sense of goodness. The righteousness of Christ is ignored, and man made morality takes it’s place, certainly even among church going communities.

What makes you think that those men and women are not out to attract others to themselves. When your attracting others to yourself, your not pointing them to the Lord.

Didn’t the same thing happen when Christianity came to the Roman Empire? The Roman men exposed their legs and only wore a short skirt (at least that is what i have seen in art), but fastforward to middle ages, and the whole body is basically covered. Isn’t that changing the ‘culture’?

First, what I said is generalized, not applying to every single person, but generalized non the less because it is the ‘Way’ of society.

The Lord by the witness of scripture indicates much to us about the difference of being clothed and nakedness. There is a spiritual meaning to all of them, but the reality of the physical aspect is always there.

Concerning cultural customs…when persons have Christ truly being formed in them, they are new creations. The new creation will now desire the Lord and being with Him over all things. The idea that persons who have the Living Spirit dwelling in them will want to hold on to their worldly cultural traditions instead of looking to Christ alone goes against scripture. The beloved in Christ Live only in Him and die to all else…including clothing traditions…including naked clothing traditions.

Reflecting local customs means language, expressions of greetings, food…not things that go against His Righteousness.

It would be justified if those persons became believers, then the missionary would only want to share the scriptures with those believers which instructs us to cover up for God’s glory.

How about instead the missionaries share God’s Word with the locals who become believers, and the believers will then desire to follow God’s instructons in Love and dress as God speaks of in His Word.

What you are describing is based in colonialism and not theology.

Natives are human beings. They have a carnal nature.I’m not familiar with the posters. But I would have to know whohow made the posters.

I don’t think that christianity was whole cause of Romans changing their dress. As you pointed out if was over a long period of time.Cultures change their dress for any number of reasons.EX.they find an easier way to make clothing from a new source. It may be cheaper. It may appeal to their tastes.I don’t know of ever reading that Christians forced their style of dress on anyone else.Since almost all countries were suit and tie in formal gatherings does that mean Japan was forced by some culture to change?

All human societies wear clothing. Some less then us Americans and whatnot, but they do what they do.
