Sears, and Walmart have some modest swim suits.

Not at our Walmart… the suits they carry here are just short of being a thong… and in fact I’ve seen a thong “mono-kini” at our store… in the size that my 12yr would wear!

I’m currently in the market as well, but I need something I can nurse in. Also, I need something for a large cup size. I looked at some lovely LL Bean tankini tops, and every single one of them the reviews said if you were average or larger on top, they would not work and would definitely not be modest.

It’s frustrating. A rash guard would not be suitable for nursing, so that is out.

The swim suit in the first post is ugly and looks more like a dress. I think everyone on the beach would be staring at you if you wore that.

I don’t like skimpy swimsuits either, and I found a nice one-piece suit at Costco on year - I think it was a Speedo. I also like the two-piece suits where the top looks more like a tank top and comes all the way down to the bottom, although I haven’t actually tried on of these yet.

All you have to do is wear a swimsuit that looks like a swimsuit and then if you don’t want people staring at you when you’re not swimming, put on a beach jacket and cover your legs with a towel.

Sun protection is a big issue in our southern climate (and we live at the water park in the summer), so I’ve had both my daughter and son wearing two-piece Landsend swimsuits for years: swim shorts paired with a short sleeve rash guard. We also eventually got my husband a long sleeve rash guard for sun protection, as it’s incredibly finicky and time consuming to cover an adult man with sun block. I have also gotten on the band wagon myself, and just bought a long-sleeved rash guard to wear with the swim shorts I’ve been wearing for years. One of the big payoffs of covering up more for women is that you don’t have to fuss so much with removing every hair from your body that isn’t on your head. It is going to dramatically speed up my prep time for getting ready for the pool.

I realize that serious swimmers need more abbreviated, aquadynaic swim suits, but when one is outdoors and planning to be in and out of the water half the day, more coverage is better, because it’s so nice not to have to worry about accidentally broiling one’s skin.

Board shorts and a tank top with a built-in shelf bra is often a good solution for situations that call for more modest swimwear, like a public beach or when you’re among family. My mother-in-law will never see me in even the cutest retro bikini…!!!

But if I’m poolside with just my husband on vacation or what have you, I don’t see anything wrong with indulging in a bit of glamour. I live in a city with a big beach and pool party culture, so I’ve ended up collecting a few suits over the years.

If you want something more covered-up and flattering to grown women (I’m 42 and a size 12), just do a search on retro swimwear or retro swimdresses. You can get some adorable retro-style suits out there that are more covered-up, but still super-cute:

A little pricey, but VERY good quality, especially at ReVamp. I have the green 1930s suit, and it still looks new after several years. I highly recommend line-drying nice swimwear rather than putting it through the dryer.

Plus I love the Bettie swimsuit and Marilyn swimsuit at Pin Up Girl Clothing. Who says a skirted swimdress has to be frumpy! They have them in basic black and several bright jewel colors and prints:

Most bathing suit retailers, including lands end and llbean, offer puny shorts and mini skirts that barely cover more than if they weren’t even there. If I looked like I did when I got married, I’d probably be thrilled with a “swim mini,” but now, that look is simply not attractive on me. The board shorts might work, but it is not always easy to find a good fit in shorts that aren’t simply elastic waisted. I use this website: hydrochic.com/ . There are a variety of options, some that look more “mainstream” than others, but the fact is that the “thigh’s swinging in the breeze” look is not one I want to provide, and this is almost the only way to avoid that. Non swim-material coverups are limited because if you’re going to be half in, half out of a pool or the ocean, you’re stuck either uncovered anyway, or covered but soggy. Plus if you ever take off your cover up, then you’ve got more skin exposed to the sun. A bathing suit that provides more coverage makes it much easier to guard against burns/skin cancer.

Modern isn’t the issue. Modesty requires proper covering. Light-skinned women should be especially concerned. A two-piece that resembles shorts, and has a top as opposed to a bra, would be acceptable.

To quote a beauty contestant acquaintance of mine: “Bikinis look like underwear and I don’t want people seeing me in my underwear in public.”

I have sworn off going to the beach for any reason. Those poor girls have been brainwashed to believe exposing 90+% of their body is OK. That’s wrong. Modesty is not about a date on a calendar. Just think about yourself and not what others might think.

Modesty is a virtue, and that goes for men as well.

I wear a regular swimsuit under a rashguard and board shorts/skirt. The swimsuit is there because as any fabric wears it can become mildly see through. I also require my children to wear their swim wear the same way. It keeps them warm in indoor pools and protects them from the sun in outdoor pools.

Rashguards are getting extremely popular due to sun safety. You can find them almost everywhere.

It is increasingly difficult to find swimsuits that are modest. With summer approaching, I am considering getting a new one. Last time it took literally several days and a dozen stores to find what I was looking for. Now that I have a little one I do not have time to search around for one like before, and have been doing mostly online shopping, of which is still difficult to find anything … here is the only one I have found so far:

Please do not buy that horrible bathing suit. There are lots of better options. The Muslim ladies at my pool wear something that sort of looks like a wet suit with a little skirt and they look much more fashionable than that one! They must get them somewhere, so I would keep looking.

I’m with you on the sunblock! A rash guard will pay for itself in the savings on sunblock. Honestly, it is upwards of $10 a bottle for the good stuff.

No worries I really did not like it either, someone had sent it in a email thread, and it was the only one I had seen closest to what i’m looking for, although ultimately I do prefer a two piece with cute shorts, not much of a fan of the skirts… this post helped a lot, with all these options, I feel much more confident in finding something online

I’m sure you can find plenty of bikinis that are like crop tops on top and shorts on bottom. The more important question is why do you think you should be the one to blame if some men are lustful. My husband doesn’t perve at other women on the beach - he only looks at me. Just wear something comfortable and that isn’t OTT, and you’ll be fine. If some man is a pervert that is not your fault.

I haven’t read the replies so I hope I’m not duplicating.

I, too, believe in modest swimwear. I ordered two new suits from Lands End that I’m very happy with – I got a swim shorts with two tank top type tops – they are tanks, but they go to about the middle of the shorts. No part of my mid drift shows. I would have gotten the swim briefs – or whatever they’re called – but unfortunately I haven’t lost enough weight to be comfortable in them; but when I tried them on, I thought they were modest enough so maybe in a few months I’ll be able to graduate to them.

If you’ll pardon my expressing my very humble opinion that suit is gosh-awful ugly.

I’m sure you can find a modest one piece (or two piece with boy shorts) that covers the necessary parts without making you looking as if you escaped from 1910. Something like this is lovely, feminine and modest - not to mention reasonably priced: tinyurl.com/k2nohnf

You can also wear a one piece with nylon shorts and a t-shirt over it, which covers you up while not calling undue attention to yourself.

There are plenty of options without going around the bend to frumpiness.

I have to agree that the OP’s swim suit is rather drab. But I love the one from Walmart. Pretty, classy yet modest!
