LOVE LOVE LOVE the jacket and the dress! You look radiant! If you are fretting about the bunchiness then take it to an alteration person. If you are worried about it costing a bunch of money, start calling the dry cleaners and ask who they recommend. Small family owned dry cleaners are usually going to go out of their way to give you a deal. These people are going to go out of their way to make the dream come true and can usually give you a great deal.

I will be wearing my mom’s veil with a blusher. My fiance has begged- I mean BEGGED- for me to have my hair down for the wedding. I’m going to start off that way. However, I expect it to be up before the end of the reception because it just refuses to hold a curl. I actually had plans to cut and donate it around when I met my fiance, but he asked me to keep it until the wedding (we pretty much knew right away). I’m donating it after the honeymoon:).

I did make the jacket myself, but it isn’t finished. I need to buy an iron to make sure everything lines up right for the lining. All of the edges are still ‘raw.’ I bought more than enough fabric, so I may make another one without my couple of boo-boos, and make a few adjustments so it fits me better. I got bridal satin (they only had one shade of white, so I pretty much just crossed my fingers), tulle, and the closest match of pre-beaded trim from Hobby Lobby. It is hard to tell in the picture, but the entire dress except the “cuff” and the hem is covered with a layer of tulle to give it a neat textured look. I did the same thing for the jacket, and I think that is why it looks like it matches so well even though the color is slightly off. My discriminating mother could tell right away  .

I’m pretty pleased with the look so far, and I know I’ll be more comfortable in church with something covering my shoulders besides my hair and veil. I’ll probably still get some white satin cord for straps to hold the dress up. It just sits on my hips and pulls funny, and I want the top to land a tad higher. Thanks for all the gushing compliments! :o

Lol, I can relate to that, there was no way I could have worn my hair completely up without getting in trouble for it. I wore part up and the rest down, but your idea sounds good too. Practice a lot doing it yourself (picking your hair up), or if you have a family member or someone at the party that can do hair, maybe you can practice with them. I think it looks nice up for the reception, from the picture you showed us (plus it can be more comfortable for dancing and stuff). I don’t know what your veil is going to look like, but there are some things you can do to your hair that will keep the loose hair look, but be made up a bit for the wedding. I looked hairstyles up online and in magazines.

If it won’t hold a curl, what have you tried to “make” it hold a curl? 🙂

My hair is also a little stubborn, but if I am choosy with my products and use specific hair styling tools as opposed to just a simple curling iron, it works well.

For instance, buy a large set of large or multi-sized hot rollers. Get a good styling gel and either Redken or Thermasilk hairspray (it responds to heat styling).

When you get out of the shower, apply the hair gel to your towel-dried hair. Blow dry for smoother strands. Section hair (meaning just take a section from the top of your head to begin with–but not too much hair–it should only be about three fingers worth in width), and rub gel over it again–not enough to wet it, but enough so that it is present. Use hairspray up and down the underside section of hair. Take a very hot roller (let heat up for 10-15 minutes), and begin at the end (and underside), rolling toward scalp. Repeat process with each section until entire head is rolled.

Leave rollers in for at least 20 minutes and let hair set. Take out sections from the bottom to the top in order to avoid tangles.

Use a pick–NOT a hairbrush, or you will distort the curls–to style. You may consider using a hairbrush on the top portion of your head, near your scalp, to give it a smoother look. If any curls flip out or look staticky, use gel to tame it.

I really think this would let even the most stubborn hair hold a curl that would last for some time. Really! 🙂

Another option is to pin-curl your hair. This way you are not relying on heat but just the concept of air-drying hair in a certain way.

Because you hair is so long and thick, it will take many hours for it to dry completely. Depending on the time of your wedding (and if you have a rehearsal dinner the night before) you would have to carefully time when to place the pin-curls in and allow many hours of drying and set time.

The night before, wash hair and blow dry until damp. Apply hair gel. Part hair either on the side or in the middle, depending where you want it to be parted the next day. Take a section of hair from the top of your head and wind into a rolled bun. Criss cross two bobby pins on top of it. Repeat in a symmetrical fashion all over your head. Use blow dryer (hopefully with diffuser attachment) to dry as much as possible, then tie a satin handerchief over your head and go to bed!

The next morning, delay taking out pin curls for as long as possible. When you do, have styling gel and hairspray as well as a hairbrush and pick available. (Pin curls are safer to brush because it just makes the ringlets look thicker and fuller.) Apply gel to any wispies and brush/pick to get the full curly look you want, then mist hairspray over it.

Obviously, doing dry runs of these suggestions is a must before the big day! 🙂

I swear by conair hot sticks. I too have long hair and it wouldn’t hold a curl. Try a little hairspray before you put the hot sticks in and it will hold. When you take the hot sticks out don’t use a hairbrush, just a pick.

This is exactly the advice I was going to give her.

(I donate 10’ to 14’ of my hair every two years too!)

These things are FLAMING hot when you put them in your hair. The heat will open up the stubborn cuticle of your hair and as it cools, it will “remember” the shape of the hot sticks better.

For long hair that doesn’t curl well- this is a must.

Another piece of advice for these, is to take a very small section of hair (a little smaller than the size of a business card), spray it with hairspray or other “hold” product you like. Then before you roll the hair, twist it into a long rope. THEN roll this “rope” of hair around the hot stick from one end to the other. This will create a “spiral” effect, and will hold the curl even better- and the curl will go all the way up to your scalp (or up to the point where you quit rolling it).

Use your fingers rather than a pick or comb to pull the curls apart, and do it up-side down so you get lots of volume- especially if you like a loose up-do.

Congrats- and your dress is lovely!

Oh, I looked at those Shetland shawls… beautiful, but my dress is so crisp-looking that I don’t think the style quite works. Great idea for an heirloom baptism shawl!

I wish my hair grew that fast! It took me 4 years to barely get 10. At least I won’t have to cut it SO so short now that I’ve waited.

Vluvski, LOVE the pictures. Your dress is so pretty and the jacket looks really good with it. By the way, dizzy’s pin curl idea is great. I’ve done it before and it gives the nicest ringlet-y curls. Give it a whirl and see what you think, for sure. And then report back to us 😛

By the way, when’s the big day? 🙂 I had my dress like, 9 months before the wedding 😃

I am glad to know that I was not alone in my quest.

My situation in finding a gown and bridesmaids’ dresses was a little different than most— since I do sew, come from a sewing family, and all of my sisters were bridesmaids, the oldest of whom was 17 at the time. My sister-in-law is older than me by a few years, so I needed something to bridge the styles between my 13-year-old sister who wants to be a cloistered nun and my 26-year-old sister-in-law. Luckily, we went with a classic style and my sisters made their own gowns. I made my gown also, because I didn’t want to spend so much money on a gown that I would need to alter— I HATE alterations! If I knew where to post photos, I would… How does one do such a thing?

My sisters are now trying to keep a Rosary/heirloom sewing business off the ground, so if you know anyone in the greater-Pittsburgh area that is in need of anything like that, or some modest weddingwear, send me a PM!

My prayers with all those preparing for marriage!

I posted my pictures by cheating a little.

I use shutterfly.com (will use them to print all my wedding photos, so I don’t feel bad “using” them to post my personal photos for online viewing).

It is very easy to use. Once your picture is uploaded to their site, view the picture from their site. Right click on the picture you want to post, and select “properties.” On the properties menu, you will see what appears to be a link to the picture itself. This is where the picture is saved on the shutterfly server. Copy this entire link.

When you come back to CA forums, look for the globe and chain icon to hyperlink to the picture location. The first prompt is for the text that will actually appear in your post. The second prompt is where you should paste the link to the location of the picture. Make sense?

I know there’s a better way to do it if you know html, but I just can’t remember…

Lovely pictures, BlestOne. Two of my girls will be young, too. 11 and 12 or 13. It helps that they’re both tall, and one of my other girls looks about 13- just very petite.

Still not sure what to do with all the younger girls in his family. I’m not a huge fan of flower girls, but I know the 9yr old sister of the 12 or 13yr old will be crushed if she doesn’t get to do something. The 6 and 3 yr olds probably won’t care as much, and I can’t trust them not to make a scene. All of them are my fiance’s nieces. Sometimes I wish I had put my foot down to all of them, but his mom begged and begged. sigh

This thread is getting off topic. I should take it to the water cooler.

Why don’t you ask them to bring up the gifts? If they do that, they get to choose what they wear… 9 and 6 yo should be able to handle it.

There is a great LDS wedding site - whiteelegance.com/catalog/default.php?cPath=1_2&osCsid=5419fc89f882178bdfb5934fa77fdcc7 for the gown section. I almost got my wedding dress there (when I was thinking of an all white gown) and the prices are definitely reasonable.

But I think the style you had us check out is quite beautiful 🙂

QUOTE=migurl]Try checking out some morman bridal shops, they have some modest things. Also, check out David’s Bridal, I got my dress there for a good price and it has 3/4 length sleeves, modest front and back and is gorgous. THey usually have good sales too. check out their website, the modest dresses are hard to find, but I know for a fact that there are at least 4 styles that are beautiful and modest. 2 are long sleeved, and the other 2 are short sleeved. They also have this jacket, (if you can call it that) it’s lace and looks very nice.

Good idea, I’ll think on that one.

For those of you who have suggested styling techniques, thanks! I tried the pin curls… not exactly what I hoped for. Granted, I had to take them out before everything was totally dry (have to wear a hard hat at work), but even the dry ones looked more like dread locks after awhile. :(. I didn’t take a picture. A couple looked good, but I’ll need something a little more consistent.

I want some nice, loose curls just at the ends so I still look like me, you know? A little bit of body so it doesn’t look blah (the way it usually looks).
