Could we form a list of modesty guiedlines for both women and men, along with the purpose

In which culture. Modesty guidelines vary according to culture/location.

Is this going to be ademocratic decision? I propose that males over 14 wear clothing that is roomy in the fly area, cover their navels, cover the entire chest and underarms, and the leg as far as the widest part of the calf muscle.

As i’ve stated in previous threads…

Tuxedo (black tie) for men.

Formal Ball Gown or Wedding Dress for women.

Only White before Labor Day for the ladies, i might add.

My personal (family) dress codes:

All clothes must be:
  1. modest
  2. gender specific
  3. age appropriate
Modest for me follows the book “Dressing with Dignity” most of the time. For me that means a skirt (at least a little below the knee) & modest shirt (not tight, no plunging necklines, if I bend over I’m still cover in the front & on my lower back.) To Mass I tend to wear the longer skirts & not sandals. As always there are exceptions, for painting the house today I wore shorts:bigyikes: [they came to below my fingertips when my arms were straight down] and an oversized t-shirt. For swimming . . . I’ve yet to find an ideal, but for now I have a tankini that I wear shorts over the bottom & the top is not too low cut & no skin is viewable between the top & bottom.

DH wears jeans, not tight & not hanging off his rear either . When wearing slacks they are always w/ pleats. He does wear shorts, usu on the longer side. In church collared shirt & tie, no shorts. Swimming he wears the usu swim trunks . . . again on the longer side & no shirt.

Modesty is something that I’ve been “into” for awhile now & we’ve fairly recently (w/ in the past year or so) been realizing that it’s not just for women 😊. I liked the response by strngrnrth & will especially look foward to hearing more responses about men/boys dress.

As for the dc, I wouldn’t dress them as mini teens or adults. & they do/will follow the guidlines above.

You haven’t been to a Mass in our area where there are huge speakers at the altar and where the men have their waist area and underarms fully exposed while banging on their electronic musical instruments during the Mass.

Yes it is, loved it! I let my SIL borrow it & now she’s dressing with dignity too 👍

It’s 96 degrees here with humidity to match and I am wearing bermuda shorts, sandals and a sleeveless (not tank top) shirt and a wide brimmed straw hat when I go outside. Nothing is tight, nothing is skimpy and I am very neat and quite comfortable.

I work on a college campus and we have some students here visiting from Jordan. The women are wearing long pants, head scarves long sleeved tops and a coat!!

Unworkable. You can’t legislate modesty. It only comes from a desire to BE modest. If you have that, you don’t need the list.

All you need is to ask yourself “What do these clothes say about who I am?” Modify until the answer is “a unique and precious child of God”.

No list required.

Another question to ask yourself is if Mary the Mother of God suddenly appeared before you, would you feel embarassed?

Well, in our family we generally follow these guidelines:

-no visible bellies
-shorts should be fairly close to knee-length (and consider this when you are sitting down)
-no cleavage should be visible (and consider this when you are bending over)
-generally, unless we’re going swimming, we keep our shoulders covered. I’m not sure if this is totally from modesty, or also from the fact that we’re all large people with flabby arms! 😛
-no visible underwear
-pants should not cling tightly in the rear

Generally, we aim for clothes that look good and don’t draw anyone’s eyes to one particular part of our bodies! People should be looking at my face when they talk to me…not staring at anything else, lol.
