Most people have been so brainwashed into thinking the more you show the better, the younger generation thinks it is normal.God Bless:eek:

I voted I don’t care. I guess I do show more skin then other people. Bikinis on the beach and short skirts don’t bother me. I’ve breastfed in the pews. Low rider jeans don’t bother me, but exposed underwear does. It’s called underwear for a reason.

Fashionwise though I hate strapless dresses/tube tops in church or anywear. Every wedding gown and bridesmaid dresses is strapless now a days. Breasts always look unsupported, if you have “back fat” it hangs over the top of the dress in back.

I din’t judge people in the pews. Now people serving in any capacity on the altar that is a different story.

I have teenage boys, and at Mass it is very hard for them to concentrate if there are females scantily clothed.God Bless:twocents:

THat is why this sort of immodest attire is called scandalous. Scandalous behaviour (including modality of dress) is anything that causes another person to take their focus off Christ.

In a early post about dress for Mass St.Gerard answered that
we are to dress modestly so as not to cause our brothers or sisters to fall.

As women, if we are dressed in a manner that causes someone to look at us in a way that would be impure or with disgust and condemnation, are we not causing our brothers and sisters to fall?

And if it makes a difference what we are wearing at the Altar, why wouldn’t it make a difference in the pews. After all, we are always standing in the sight of our Lord.

I agree with Scott. Immodest dress at Mass is a slap in the face to God. Totally unnecessary and insulting.

I totally agree with the lact of respect and regard being in the presence of God. This matter should be addressed to the appropriate channels before it gets out of hand. I have been trying to sit as close to the front as possible with my daughters to avoid getting distracted. And not only with women, quiet a few times i’ve seen men wearing knee-length short pants/slacks with sleeveless shirts.

Catholics need to stop following along with whatever secular society tells them is appropriate. Fashions should follow the Church, not the Church follow fashions. Aren’t we supposed to live IN the world, but not be OF the world?

Most people do not worry about how they dress. They do not care if it is a distraction to others, in fact they can sometimes see it as a complement.

Although I have no business talking as I may be resorting to wearing jeans for a few months as I really do not like clothes meant for early maternity and I can’t wear most of my church clothes. Although I do have some dresses that will still be comfy for a while and I will wear them as long as I can.

It’s all the “peer pressure” and stupid junk like that. I hate it when people dress immodestly anywhere let alone mass. My parents are constantly telling me & my sisters how important it is to dress modestly at all times, but especially at mass. I don’t think I’ve ever worn jeans to mass…😃 I think it’s important to dress appropriately for the occasion. And to be modest at all times…

If people can’t appreciate the value in themselves except as they are valued by or attractive to others, then I think immodesty is inevitable either in dress, speech, or something. At least, that is how I suspect it works for some of the population.

A big problem that I continually run into is too many people take the attitude that “God loves you exactly as you are” to mean that Mass is nothing special. No effort is needed because…you know…

You know what? Jeans and a nice sweater or shirt are a LOT more modest than some of the dresses and skirts I’ve seen on some women during Mass. I think the Lord much prefers that a women dress in jeans than in a teeny miniskirt or a halter dress with a big slit in the skirt that shows off an entire leg.

Right now I think I only own one or two skirts (out of more than a half-dozen) that are above the knee, and I don’t wear those to Mass. Long skirts are more comfortable and warmer (a big consideration here in Michigan, and in our big drafty old church). I can usually find nice ones for good prices at Old Navy or Target.

Our Pastor preaches about this, whenever there is an incident of someone coming to Mass or a church function, that is immodest in dress. He says it leads others to sin. Not talking about casual clothing, but lack of clothing. This is a big relief for me as the deacon. I think that it should come from the pastor.

May God bless those who insist that his house be a house of prayer and not a nightclub.

Deacon Tony

Answer = Vatican II

Nothing more needs to be said.
This is true to a certain point. It wasn’t Vatian ll per se, it was the people who percieved it.

I don’t know if I agree with you in post 17. I don’t think that Vatican II had that much to do with it as much as American Catholics going crazy ( I don’t know about other countries).

I really suspect that it is part of God letting mankind sort of pay out the rope with which to hang himself, by letting us see just how stupid we really are and what the consequences are.

I honestly pray that God reallly was speaking through the Blessed Virgin at Garabandal and that in his mercy there is a worldwide “great warning” on the way. We need it…I think I need it too. A “correction of conscience” would be good for me.

Here is the Church’s declaration on what is modest, written under direction of Pope Pius XI.

“We recall that a dress cannot be called decent which is cut deeper than two fingers breadth under the pit of the throat, which does not cover the arms at least to the elbows, and scarcely reaches a bit beyond the knee. Furthermore, dresses of transparent material are improper.”

Also, under Blessed John XXIII, women crossdressing (pants) was reiterated as being condemned by the Church: olrl.org/virtues/pants.shtml
