How much modesty is to be observed between spouses? I’m looking for the traditional view of this, so please, please, please, PLEASE don’t quote Theology of the Body or Christopher West.
Thank you:)
If you are asking if spouses may see naked each another, my answer is yes. They can see naked each another, indeed sometime they must, at least in the sexual intercourses.
In 1904 the moralist Henry Sani wrote that there is nothing wrong also if spouses want be always naked when they are alone (H. Sani, Theologia Moralis Pastoralis. Principia et casus, page 74.

There are those Victorians who felt that modesty demanded that they never see each other naked, and so wore nightclothes with strategic holes in them. It seems to me this is another kind of sin.

Modesty is about using our sexuality in an appropriate way. Expressions of sexuality are appropriate in marriage, including nakedness. It would be wrong to inflame a spouses sexual desire at certain times, in public, or while fasting, so one ought to refrain from doing that. That could mean not having nakedness between spouses at that time.

It would also, I think, be wrong to demand less modesty than one’s spouse was comfortable with. In the case that modesty of this kind became something else, a kind of prudishness, it would have to be dealt with in some other way. But this is more an issue of being kind than immodest.
