Modifications to the Confession

The confessor I go to never asks me to say an Act of Contrition. I say it before I say my penance, anyway, but aren’t they supposed to follow the format?
 
It is permissable for the Act of Contrition to NOT be said during confession. I have also been told to say it after I left the confessional.
 
Thank you. I am a new Catholic and still trying to figure things out.
