Modifying Gideon Bibles

We were on our annual 4th of July vacation this week and the lodge we stayed in had the standard Protestant bible distributed by the Gideons. Being Protestant bibles, they are missing the Deuterocanonical books. I started thinking that it would be easy to develop an insert of the Deuterocanonical with a sticky strip on the back. They could be inserted into the bibles with a note on the history of the Deuterocanon and why it has been excluded from the bible they are holding.

Would there be anything inherently wrong with doing that? If you had that opportunity, would you complete these bibles?
 
I see nothing wrong with that at all. What good is the Bible if it isn’t the whole thing? 😉
 
I, personally, think it is a great idea (I’m one who never fails to insert a Catholic apologetics tract into every hotel Bible I come across).

I’m not sure how easy this insert would fit, however, because the seven DC books (unless they were in very small print and on very thin paper) might not fit very well. Still, if there were a product like that, I’d buy several.

Wow I thought I was the only one who wanted to do something like this! I recently added something to the Bible in the drawer of the last hotel I stayed in… kinda spontaneously actually. I put a piece of paper with “Justification = Faith + Works, James 2:24” on it because the Gideons Bible made a reference to faith alone in the index in the front. Anyway great to see others doing this, keep up the good work!
 
I think it would be easy enough to make a booklet to place with the bible that has the DC books and a quick Catholic FAQ section.

It could be expensive though, best printing price will be around $4 a copy unless you order large quantities.

Funny you should say that, because when I leave a copy of the Catholic tract on “Justification” I always insert it into James, Chapter 2 or Romans 3:28. 😃
 
I see New Testaments and Psalms for sale for $2.99 retail. I would think a large printing would come in at around a dollar a copy. I would also expect some flack from the Gideons. They are not the most ecumenical group around. In fact, our pastor has banned them from coming back to our church.

I don’t think the Gideons could really do anything to someone who publishes this material for this purpose. Once the Bibles are placed in the hotel, they basically relinquish ownership of them. I’ve heard spokesmen for the Gideons state that their hope is that

The product could be marketed as a supplement for ANY medium sized Bible that is lacking the DC’s. 🙂
 
I think I’m going to contact a printer about this. I can get 100 business cards for free. I ought to be able to have something like this produced for a reasonable amount. I’ll keep y’all posted…

Oops! Didn’t finish my thought in Post #10!

Once the Bibles are placed in the hotel, they [the Gideons] basically relinquish ownership of them. I’ve heard spokesmen for the Gideons state that their hope is that people will take these Bibles home, at which point they will be replaced. I’ve also seen the Book of Mormon in hotels in Utah and other places, so they’re used to a little competition. 😃
 
I think it’s a great idea - the Deuterocanonical inserts and the Catholic tracts.

We shouldn’t sit back, wait for people to find the Church, and only then begin to share the Catholic faith. Christ sent the Apostles out to preach the Gospel to the ends of the earth. We should also be agressive in promoting the Church.
 
I should add also that before I place these Catholic tracts in the Gideon Bible, I also write the web address of a good Catholic apostolate (like *Catholic Answers *or Catholics Come Home) so that if the Spirit moves the finder to want to know more about the Faith, he has a place to start.

I’ve left them other places too-- like truck stops, phone booths, and laundromats-- basically the places you typically find JW, LDS and Fundamentalist material. Hey, if it works for them, it should work even better for us, right?😉
