Someone gave me a number as to how old Mohammad’s wife was when he married her and…I didn’t think it could be true.

Can anyone clarify?

Yikes. I hate to ask, I assume he waited until she was at least in child bearing age to consummate the marriage. Yes? I know nothing on this subject or person. I did read a modern guide took to Egypt and it said if you visit some of the remote areas don’t be shocked to meet young girl brides.

Reportedly consumated at age 9. Frightening.

he waited until she was of the ripe old age of 9. if some guy approached me and said i have seen your 6 year old daugter in my dream and allah told me she is to be my wife, give her to me… well lets just say, islam would have had to find another prophet. Peace

Why did he “need” three wives? No one “needs” 3 wives. That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.

in total i thought he had 31. some of whom died, a few who divorced. not to mention the concubines. personally im surprised he had time to preach, write or anything else. its hard enough keeping ONE woman happy. let alone more… Peace 🙂

Wow, that’s some dedicated man to God- having “concubines,” IE women who’s sheer purpose is to please him sexually.

not to mention wanting his sons wife. this guy is so wrong on so many levels, its insane. just look at the history on this guy, compare it with what we know of Jesus, and there is nothing at all to compare the two. even IF a person thinks that Jesus is not divine, at least compared to this “prophet” His behavior is beyond reproach. Peace 🙂

Sahih Muslim, Book 008, Number 3309:
“'A’isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported: Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) married me when I was six years old, and I was admitted to his house at the age of nine. She further said: We went to Medina and I had an attack of fever for a month, and my hair had come down to the earlobes. Umm Ruman (my mother) came to me and I was at that time on a swing along with my playmates. She called me loudly and I went to her and I did not know what she had wanted of me. She took hold of my hand and took me to the door, and I was saying: Ha, ha (as if I was gasping), until the agitation of my heart was over. She took me to a house, where had gathered the women of the Ansar. They all blessed me and wished me good luck and said: May you have share in good. She (my mother) entrusted me to them. They washed my head and embellished me and nothing frightened me. Allah’s Messenger (, may peace be upon him) came there in the morning, and I was entrusted to him.”

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 62, Number 64:
“*Narrated 'Aisha:*that the Prophet married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old, and then she remained with him for nine years (i.e., till his death).”

**The third was `A’ishah daughter of Abi Bakr, whom the Prophet married in Mecca when she was only seven years of age. **

She was the only virgin whom the Prophet married.

He went into her when she was eight years and three months old, after his migration to Medina.

`A’ishah lived well into Mu’awiyah’s caliphate (she died in 56/678).

I don’t think we can ascribe “modern” ideas of “coming of age” upon cultures so far removed in time from ours that their beliefs and social norms differ. It wasn’t too long in our own country that young girls were married off to older men as soon as they reached menses…the crude addage…“old enough to bleed, old enough to breed” did not have it’s origins in Middle Eastern culture but right here in the good ole’ USA.

My aunt was married at 13…had her first child at 15…she and her husband were migrant laborers and as soon as her dad could get her out of the house it was one less mouth to feed for him.

Still, even in the mountain regions of Appilatia young girls are married to older men…especially where medical care is absent as many women die in child birth…as they did 150 plus years ago. Older men marrying young women was fairly common…even in Catholic tradition Joseph seems to be an older man who married a young teen girl.

Until recently in our own country women had little or no rights…they were “child bearers” and “child care givers”…not to mention sexual outlets for the men…and often the parents of the girls arranged the marriages…and this is in the USA’s recent history.

We cannot compare with any integrity those cultural practices that occured some 1400 years ago with today and play “ain’t it aweful”.

In the Middle Ages children were executed for stealing bread right along with adults…and this in “Christian” countries.

You are compairing things going on in society for centuries with young girls being married off. - OK - I get it - it happened and it still happens.

However,… we are talking about a “prophet” of God or allah, by the name of mohamad - and mohamad said that allah made this lawful, allah told mohamad to marry little Aishia at the age of 6 and he was 53 - !!!

Any “prophet” is a product of the time and culture in which they live…7th century norms in Arabia are not impacted by 21st century beliefs of Christians…neither is 7th century, 10th century, 16th century Europe nor is 17th, 18th and 19th century American practices.

The racial cleansing that took place in Judah by the returning Hebrews when they returned from Exile seem barbaric to modern culture…but “prophets” called for the racial cleansing. Religious practices have always been impacted by the culture they reside in.

Mr. Publisher, you have you opinion and I have mine -

Having intercoarse with a 9 year old is wrong in any timeframe whatso ever… weather it be 2000 years ago,1400 years ago or today.

That is just wrong on sooo many levels.

From our modern divisions of “childhood”, “adolescence”, “adult”…but in those cultures removed from us by 1400 plus years, it was a common practice…in many ancient cultures when a girl reached “maturity” and was able to bear children they were women…no longer children.

In some cultures…and still today in some…parents arrange marriages between family members who are not yet off their mother’s teat…and when they reach maturity are married.

Women died in child birth all the time. Infant mortality was high. Men married young strong women, by our standards today “girls”, to care for their children and provide heirs.

Perhaps some scholar here at CAF would be so kind to discuss the practices of “Christian” Europe and those fuedal societies of those times…“Christian societies”.
