Mommy jobs-does anyone have one?

For the upcoming school year, we will have some expenses, so I was thinking to get a family friendly job. One for mornings while the children are in school, or evenings after hubby is home. I also do crafts, but is this reasonable to start a craft business? Can this be profitable?

I do not want to return to my profession, as it consumes me, both with hours and attention. Does anyone here have a mom friendly job? I am not looking for a stay at home job with an mlm company.

I also noticed a trend in my area- one minute moms at my kid’s schools are looking for work, and then before you know it-they are working at the school as a secretary, or a teachers assisitant. How does this happen? That seems good too.

Any advice would be appreciated!

I work part time, from 9am to 1.30pm, but sometimes I stay longer if there is a meeting I should attend, or if I am sent to a conference for the day. But that does not happen very often, maybe 2-3 times a month.

I am very happy with this arrangement because I feel like I get the best of both worlds: enough time with the children and a bit of interesting work that keeps my brain engaged and is an opportunity to be social in a non-mommy environment. The job is interesting but not stressful, which is really important to me.

Perhaps you should ask at the school if they need someone to work part time and ask them to remember you when something comes up.

Down the road, I’m thinking of doing tax preparation work with H & R Block or similar. Presumably, it would be very busy during the spring, but quieter the rest of the year.

I work part time for our parish.

If you are interested in only working when your kids are in school, why don’t you seek out a job at the school? Schools need office staff, custodians, bus drivers, and paras. They’re good jobs with health insurance and good hours for parents with young kids. These, however, are full-time positions and have significant responsibilities as well as a pretty rigid calander. They don’t want someone who is going to turn around a quit on them once they’ve got all their Christmas presents bought or the braces paid off, so you might not want to refer to it as a “mommy job” when you interview.

I’ve been surprised how many jobs posted on Craigslist in our area advertise school hours. I guess that is the upside of them being only part-time. If you haven’t checked there, I would. I have seen a variety of types of jobs - office, housekeeping, retail. One reason I like Craigslist (even though there can be creepers and scams) is that a lot of the postings are small businesses, and they’re much more likely to be flexible with your scheduling needs (and appreciative of family).

If the state guidelines aren’t overly costly or restrictive, you could consider doing at-home daycare, as well. I know several moms who do that.

Thank you all for the great ideas, and any more tips are appreciated! We moved from a very large city to a small town, and the problem for me is that I used to just give a resume to an employment agency and they would arrange interviews. I would have a lot of interviews in a short time too. This is how I always have done it.

Where we live now, its a lot different, especially for part time so thank you again!
