I never understood this argument. You wouldn’t go back to Mass and attend the Church that you believe holds the fullness of the faith because someone was cold or mean to you?

Aren’t Christ and the sacraments more important?

My adult son is gay in in a relationship. We were estranged for several years because of my beliefs on sin. He phoned one day contemplating suicide. I ran to his side and accompanied him to the hospital. His partner was there and it was extremely difficult. I also witnessed how his partner cared. Since then, we have reconciled. He is very open in talking with me about the Catholic Church and Christ. He knows I ask for St. Monica and St. Augustine to intercede. He keeps a St. Monica card on his computer. Has he come back to Christ? No, not yet. Do I love him? With all my heart. Do I wish things were different? Absolutely. I cherish the two hours he spent with me sitting in a darkened church with Our Lord in the Tabernacle, listening to me share Christ and His love, and forgiveness. I don’t know the future, if they will every “marry.” If they do, I pray I have the courage and love to attend. It will be very difficult for all involved.

Dlee, thank you for sharing that, and for posting something that people on both sides of the “should he attend or not?” argument can hit the “like” button on. 🙂

I understand your point about all these marriage possibilities. My point was more to how far do we go with scrutinizing every wedding or event we attend. Do we really look at all the sub-parts and contributors and base our final decision on the CCC. I do not believe same-sex “marriage” should be legal. I just don’t want to be a hard-hearted pharisee and lack love and charity. Thanks for understanding. I don’t want the OP to chance alienation from his mother. She knows what he believes. Peace.

I pray you have the courage to tell him why you cannot attend, that you love him just the same, and that you love his partner enough to not condone a travesty.

Or we pray she attends and celebrates the love she has for her son. :pray:t2:🌷

but I’ve realized that if I go, that means that I support it.
I’m a mom. I have a son who is an adult.

If something happened and he chose a dark path, if he committed crime, if he committed murder, I would still be his mom and I would still love him. I would put money in his prison commissary account, I would visit him every time the prison allowed it and I would stay as long as they let me. I’d write him a letter every day. If my fellow parishioners saw me doing that, not a one of them would think that those actions of love meant for one moment I supported his crime, his sin. They would see a mom who loves unconditionally.
Beautiful and it only took until post 135 to get here.

This entire thread makes me sad. I don’t know how someone struggling with ssa/homosexuality/ whatever you want to call it is going to come away from this thread feeling like there is a place for them in the Church. How would they walk away from this thread feeling loved. How?

The first commandment is LOVE.

If there is anyone reading this who is courageously choosing the third way or even currently falling to sin know that YOU ARE LOVED. God loves you and wants nothing but the best for you. And, despite what you see here, God’s church values and loves you.

Love the sinner, hate the sin. LOVE.

Why would it take courage to attend? It sounds like you are afraid of what he might do if you don’t attend. Could he tolerate your beliefs as you tolerate his lifestyle? Do you have to condone it?

one thing catholics are taught is to love on another as Jesus did
your mom might be gay , but Jesus loves here for her not for some religion , remember Jesus loves everyone …
that love he gave us it to be shared among our family and friends strangers ,not matter what !!

Murder is a one time deal. Hes not committing murder anymore in prison. Now if he were an organized crime member and you knew he killed people and was planning to keep killing people for basically his whole life, and you knew it, didn’t like it, but you went to a Mafia celebration anyway, that would be more of an equivalent scenario-in terms of tacit condonement anyway-not the sin itself.

Two people of the same gender cannot marry. Likewise, two men and one woman cannot marry. Both go against the definition of marriage. When you were a girl, never once did you think you’d grow up and marry a girl. Back then, people knew what marriage was. If I had talked to you about marriage then, you would have said it’s preposterous for two men or two women to think they can marry. This big shift is very recent in history. Normal friends don’t need commitment ceremonies. They just continue on. These two women are two friends who have decided to sin. And the presumed sexual relationship they engage in is not moral because it offends God, and goes against the Bible and His Church.

For you to keep writing that it’s inappropriate for me to follow the Church’s teachings, ie. calling lesbian marriage nonsense, is one more proof that you are tearing down the Church from within, knowingly or unknowingly.

Lara, the poster describes herself as an “agnosthic theist.” So, not Catholic.

Courage to do what I believe God would have me to do - to attend a wedding and to show my love to my son. He knows my beliefs and accepts our differences. I don’t condone his life style, I love him unconditionally as Christ loves me. I’m not ashamed or embarrassed by him - I pray for him.

I know this. She claims to be helpfully giving advice, even when it abjectly contradicts Church teaching. She sees no harm in this. People posting on this forum, often for the first time, deserve a Catholic answer, even if it’s given by an agnostic.

Yes and coming on these forums and sewing heterodoxy certainly is working “from within” in a sense.
