I studied History of Art, with an emphasis on medieval art. I know that this lead me to the Church.
My first two trips to Rome were before I was a Catholic. I saw all the monuments and masterpieces and I “knew” what I was looking at: why it was important, what it meant, etc.
I just went a couple of weeks ago, my first trip since my conversion. This time, I related to the churches in a very personal way. But, I seem to have forgotten all the art history. I mean, I’d be in front of some fresco, saying, “I wrote a paper about this. It’s really important. Um… I don’t remember what was so important about it. It sure is purty.”
But, this trip was so much more meaningful! I have never really used my degree and I don’t even work, now. I do think it served its purpose, however, as it brought me into the Church.
