Monastic Diurnal and Latin

Hey all, so I’m in Australia, where we get barely any variety with really anything related to liturgical books. I made the rookie mistake of buying the US LOTH, which is okayish in translation, problem is is its not approved here. So what it seems like I’d be doing if I was continuing down the path of LOTH is to use up another $150+ on top of about $250 already done.

Now personally, I really dislike the NJB translation, and I’m not the biggest fan of how the AU breviary looks, that being said. I’m very interested in benedictine spirituality, and have had my eyes on the Monastic Diurnal for a short while now. I would go ahead and get it but the issue is, I don’t know latin, like at all. I’m about 6 hours away from any TLM (to my knowledge) besides SSPX or a priest I don’t particularly want to go to personally, but I would assume not everyone who prays the Monastic Diurnal can read fluent latin.

So in hopes a few of you may pray that or pray anything like it in Latin, how would you pray if you didnt know latin? to me personally it feels like something you have to know what youre reading as youre reading it (I know theres a translation beside it), so how would you pray if you didnt know? Would it just be better to go with the other option and begrudgingly deal with the AU Divine Office?

I do love the way the English translation looks, so it’s very tempting to also get it for that, I did hear though that the English isn’t approved for use or something. So that’s another thing to pile onto my reasons I’m at a bit of a crossroads. I so supposed though if I really wanted, getting a copy of the Bible translation they use in the Breviary here isn’t too hard.

Do you think that might be a good idea?

I recieved mine yesterday, and I’m absolutely in love with it. I find the latin to be spiritually rich in the ecclesiastical tradition following the pre-ecumenical councils that slowly robbed us of our vibrant faith. It’s a little expensive but oh so worth it.

I have a MD, Roman Breviary, LOTH, and Latin Liturgia Horarum, as well as the Little Office of the BVM, still others. The MD is quite a chunk of time if you want to do it all. I don’t recommend starting out with the idea you will be saying all of the hours from Day 1. Set realistic goals.

After trying everything under the sun, I’ve settled on praying the Latin Liturgy of the Hours since it accords with my parish’s OF Mass calendar. It’s also less of a time commitment.
