Monetary Offering at Mass g

At my parish the monetary offering from the parishioners is handed directly to the priest after the bread and wine. At another nearby church the monetary offering is taken directly around the priest by an usher and placed at the alter while the priest is accepting the bread and wine.
Should the priest accept the monetary offering at the nearby parish?

What is the correct procedure?

It usually depends on how much personnel you’ve got. If you’ve got ushers to spare, you can use ushers. If there’s nobody, the priest can take the money.

My dad tells me that when he was a kid there was no collection.

His family gew up in Boston, Massachusetts in the 1920’s through the 1940’s and into the 50’s. He said that sometimes there was ‘seat-money’ and that it was put directly by anybody who wanted to into a poor box in the back of the church. But, he said there was no collection, no baskets or anything.

I recall a parish that I attended a few times where they still used the poor-box/seat money thing aka. no collection. I’m going back 15-years at least though with that memory. But… it was an Ordinary Form parish that used the altar rail and patens for holy Communion.

I think (fairly certain) that the altar rail isn’t used anymore… the rector there was rid of by way of what has now been declared a false allegation, which took 10-years of his priesthood away from him. It was one of those incredulous railroading cases that Cardinal Burke personally intervened in.
