Since you have responded and actually taken in someone off the street, would you mind letting us know the outcome?
I’m curious to know if the person accepting your kindness in opening your home to them actually used that opportunity to make their life better. Did they seek employment while living with you or do anythting to make their lives better or did they abuse the opportunity you gave them.

It would have to be a very, very special and unique circumstance for me to even consider doing this. A guy in my neck of the woods just got stabbed to death the other day for giving a stranger a ride home. I would not feel safe inviting a stranger into my home.
It’s very sad that things are the way they are.

I never would. I live here with my teenage son. No way would I take anyone in.It would have to be a very, very special and unique circumstance for me to even consider doing this. A large city near me banned panhandlers after the newspaper did an expose on how some of these panhandlers were not actually homeless and actually made a lot of money panhandling. They followed some of these men, when they would leave their “spot” and they would walk a few blocks and get picked up by their wives in cadillacs and go home.
So when I moved to a city (not the same one) and would be approached by people on Sundays when we would be downtown for Mass, we would always refuse. I started carrying a granola bar in my diaper bag, but everyone always turned me down that.
It makes me even more suspicious of motives.

while there are some legitimate homeless people out there, most do have a homeless shelter, the ones we see on the street are usually the ones with a drinking or drug addiction,
but then yes we have some that do it for a living.
The dumpster diver who frequented a house by the college told my husband he makes a
few hundred a week diving for cans,
that the college kids find easier to throw out than recycle.

I took him out for a late-night steak dinner, gave him my bed to sleep in, and let him take a shower the next morning while I washed his clothes. Then I dropped him off somewhere he wanted to go and I haven’t heard from him since. He didn’t ask for employment, and I have no idea if he used the experience to make his life any better.

I once had a guy standing in front of a Taco Bell ask me for money to get food. I offered to buy him some tacos instead of giving him money. He refused the offer.
Once travelling, I had a couple come up to me with desperation on their eyes that they needed money for gas. I gave them five bucks …down the road I saw them getting gas.
Late one night when I was very young (early 20’s) I was travelling alone in my van on the NY state throughway. I saw a man on the side of the road hitch hiking. It was 3am in the morning with no other cars on the road. I had an overwhelming feeling to pick him up; so I did. He got in my van thanked me profusely and told me he had been walking a long time. He went in his napsac ate a banana and asked me if I believed in Jesus as my saviour, then he took out his bible and began to read with a flashlight. After I dropped him off at an exit; I never saw him again.I am a cradle Catholic who lost her way at that young age. Coincidence? I think not.
You do not know what people are going to do with the money but you do know how your conscience is going to feel. I go with my intuition and that way I don’t need to question their motives.

This is hard to answer. Just a few days ago a street person asked me for money. I was sitting in a cafe and he was outside the window. He had a sign that said he’d just been released from the hospital (he did look like he had mental problems) and needed $78 to buy a bus ticket to see his kids. I gave him $5. He might have been lying, I don’t know, it did seem fishy.
But I just couldn’t get out of my head that that may have been Christ I was refusing to give a measly $5 to. I also give to plenty of charities. There’s just no way to know how to handle this every time, we just do our best.

A guy in a pick up truck came up to me at a gas station and said he was on empty and no cash, could I help him out, I gave him 10 and he then got into his truck and drove off without getting gas.
I just find it hard to say no.

I work downtown and walk to the bank every day for my job. It’s about six blocks round trip.
For my own safety, I don’t bring anything with me except my phone.
Once in a while I am approached for cash. I don’t give because I don’t have any with me.
Am I wrong to do that? Should I put a dollar in my pocket just in case someone walks up to me and requests it?

I don’t think you should start carrying money, Once it starts if your on the same path everyday, it may become a daily thing.
a year from now you may have 5 regulars

Thanks. But again, imagining myself in his place, I eventually realized there must have been others who helped him before I came along, yet there he was in spite of it. My eyes were opened and now I no longer give anything to anyone.

I don’t either; last time I did someone a favour I was robbed of quite a large amount of money. Next homeless person who asks me for anything is getting directions to the homeless shelter, but no rides and no cash.
I give to the agencies that help, because I know my money will be used wisely, and because I get a tax deduction, and then the abortionists and other bad guys get less of my tax money.

How about the people who beg in front of churches? I saw this a few times. Once my mom, instead of giving money, invited a woman with a baby inside to attend Mass. But she refused.

They know that people feel guilt ridden when they see someone begging outside Church, so, those folks are an easy mark.
