Catholic charities, whether they offer rosaries or other ‘junk’, are largely volunteer organizations and have the lowest overhead of virtually all charities world wide. Better than 90% of the donations reach those in need. The small items enclosed in requests that we receive in the mail is money well spent by the charity. They would not do this if they found that it was not worthwhile. Moreover, the religious objects enclosed in the requests will prompt spiritual thoughts and prayers on the part of the recipient. I see nothing negative or vile in any of this.

I know how frustrating and money consumed these churches and charities may appear on the outside, however, I challenge you (when you are out of school) to try to raise money for your church. You will see how very difficult it can be! That’s why mass mailings are so vital. You send out thousands upon thousands of requests for donations and are grateful to receive a handful. The other problem is that when you are raising funds to sustain an organization, many people fail to give what they can because they take it for granted that these institutions will always be there. However, in times of crisis, people tend to give more because they can actually “see” the need for funds. It costs a lot of money to maintain churches and unless we can “see” any imminent danger of losing the church, we fall short in our donations.
