Why is it that many bishops are chosen from the ranks of monks?
I have a few ideas, but I want to see what the official position is.

I can give the answer from an Orthodox viewpoint:

The feeling is that a bishop, being the chief pastor of the diocese, should be a man of prayer. He has deacons and presbyters to take care of the mundane stuff.

Alas, this principle has frequently been compromised by finding a priest with good administrative skills, doing a pro forma* tonsure, and then ordaining him bishop.*

So a bishop’s prayerfulness should be more important than his administrative ability?

Well, that makes sense now. I have another question. Who legally chosses a bishop in the Catolic Church? The Pope? Holy Synod? etc.

In the Eastern Churches a bishop is chosen by the Synod except for in the diaspora for some reason. In the US bishops of the Eastern Churches are chosen by the pope. This should go back to tradition though.

In the west the patriarch of the church chooses the bishop, for most of us in the US it would be the pope.

Unofficially the pope doesn’t know every potential bishop, every priest in every far off land. Local bishops recommend to the pope who to select as a bishop.

I typed it in to google and this was the first result:

But in all cases in the Catholic Church, the pope has the final say, correct?

And would say bishops are ordained or consecrated to the episcopacy? I had a discussion about this on an earlier thread and people really didn’t know. Before Vatican II, I know priest/bishop were the same order as priests because technically, under the situation they can confirm and ordain other priests.
