Just “stumbled” across this. Sounds very cool!

In the midst of your busy schedule, perhaps you would consider a surprising, an extraordinary change of plans.

How would you like to become a Catholic monk - for a few days? Saint Benedict Abbey introduces:
MONK FOR A WEEKEND

a program which allows Catholic men (ages 18-32) to come to our monastery to share and observe our monastic life for a weekend.

Thought I would pass it on. 👍 👍

:bigyikes: :nope:  :ehh: That sounds great for you guys, let me know how it goes and say a prayer for me as I think I am losing my mind or my posts one:nope:

that is such a good idea. What a wonderful way to promote voacations. have people take a retreat and engage in all the (non ordained or vowed) functions of a religious.

I know! They need “be a priest for a week!” You can consecrate the host, perform marriages, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, say Masses, instigate heretical schismatic sects…you name it! ALL WHILE A POOR CELIBATE! Now THAT’S the good life!😛

The monk thing actually sounds like an awesome idea. If I were old enough, I’d join in a heartbeat.

i didnt mean it like that. It woudl just be cool to have a retreat where you lived like a religous for a few days, or in some cases a priest (while of course not exersizing any sacrimental functions you do not posess)

We have this at our abbey! The local Benedictine monks have a “Monastic Live-In” for both ze boys und ze girls. I attended the one for women, and they usually have nuns from their sister monastery way over in the States, but of course, me with my wonderful luck, they couldn’t make it when I went… Anyway, they better be there next time! 😛

So yeah, the one for the boys is this week… And I think it’s both for priest vocations and religious life vocations, because my parish priest is absent from the parish due to his being the one in charge of the retreat.

I find it hilarious that it’s free for us gals, but the boys have to pay something like $50…

Check out this site: www.vocationsplacement.org/

They have information on retreats and discernment retreats all over the country, with different orders.

Lisa, this may not be too close to Memphis … but I had an absolutely wonderful experience at St. Bernard’s Abbey in Birmingham. And they only suggest a donation of $35-40 per night, which includes food. Can’t beat that! I know there are also several places in St. Louis, if that’s more accessable.

I’m sorry, I should have said Cullman, Alabama. A few miles north of Birmingham.

Note all, most abbeys (monasteries) are not closed to age, such as Saint Benedict was not. Each abbey is autonomous and I like this. Also, no liberal or dictator bishop can meddle in the Abbey’s internal affairs, or anything, as per Abbots are like Bishops over their sort of miniture diocese=the monastery.

I have been on a couple live-ins and will be making a month-long observership to a monastery in the american southwest soon

There are indeed some monasteries that are closed to potential new vocations over 35 or so. but some will consider even people on the far side of 40 on a case-by-case basis. I know. I turn 42 tomorrow 🙂
