I was reading on “the great heresies” in the catholic answer library when I stumbled upon Montanism. Im not meaning to be uncharitable but doesnt this sound a bit like modern pentacostalism?

“Montanus began his career innocently enough through preaching a return to penance and fervor. His movement also emphasized the continuance of miraculous gifts, such as speaking in tongues and prophecy. However, he also claimed that his teachings were above those of the Church, and soon he began to teach Christ’s imminent return in his home town in Phrygia. There were also statements that Montanus himself either was, or at least specially spoke for, the Paraclete that Jesus had promised would come (in reality, the Holy Spirit).”

Thoughts?

Oh and HELLO Im new to the forums 😃

Welcome

I must say I didn’t read up on Montanism but my thoughts are that Montanus was not the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit descended on the apostles in the upper room when Jesus was resurrected. I also think that all Christians can and do sometimes speak for the Holy Spirit. I don’t know if “for” the Holy Spirit is accurate. Maybe in the Holy Spirit might be better. I think all Christians can be filled with the Holy Spirit in they ask and have faith.
