Friends 🙂 I make no secret of the fact that it was traditional Catholic music which brought me to the faith. When an atheist, a keen sense of glory flowed through my veins when I heard Haydn… but it wasn’t from any acknowledged source. As belief in God started to take root, I realised that all this beautiful intensity which had grounded itself in my soul came from God! Now, I try to listen to one orchestrated Mass, Te Deum, Psalm, or Hymn every day to remind myself of the majesty of God.

It would be very moving to me, a little convert, to compile a list of the most dramatic, evocative, and often traumatic music of Catholic history. I implore you not to give me anything by Bach, Händel, Purcell, or the many other Protestant masters. This is not to degrade the amazing music of our brothers, but to increase pride in Catholic composers.

Please insert music here that fills you with images of high altars, incense, angelic armies, martyred regiments of saints, and the glory of God. Orchestral is what I’m really looking for, but organs are far from unacceptable. I’ll start with the Baroque, my favourite! 😉

Heinrich von Bibern: Missa Christi resurgentis (the Gloria is amazing)
Haydn: Missa in angustiis (an epic Credo with the full force of Heaven) - and 13 other Masses
Schubert: the E-flat major Mass (D. 950) and an A-flat major mass fill any nave with the echoes of the angelic hosts beautifully!
Charpentier, Lully, Delalande: Te Deum, all powerful

If anyone knows of Psalm settings or even Gospel-verses set to music by Catholics, I’d love to see it! We must emphasise the great force which Catholics have had on music praising God.

I’m a fan of great Catholic Choral music, which is strange since my work life is more in the orchestral world, but that’s for another day. So, if one day you are curious, look for Palestrina and Victoria - choral music of heaven!

Orchestral music from Catholics…well, Vivaldi was the “red Priest” so you should certainly get to know his “Gloria” and other things. The Romantic era had a few serious Catholics, one of them being Bruckner, who has a famous “Te Deum” and more. Also, wasn’t Cesar Franck almost a priest, or was a priest?

One of your links was to Biber - this man created some AMAZING works for solo violin where he has a brief 3-part “sonata” for each of the mysteries of the rosary. (Called the Sacred Sonatas or the Rosary Sonatas) Here’s the incredible part - each sonata is performed with the violin tuned differently. Not orchestral, but really an amazing achievement!

Oh I forgot, but since you mentioned Haydn - he had a string quartet with"cantor" based on the 7 last words of Christ. It turned out so well he later made an orchestral version as well.
