Moral Indignation

How often in reading posts here on CAF have any of you felt moral indignation? How some Catholics will proudly declare that they will vote for Obama and the teachings of the Church be damned. Yet if we say anything bad, we get punished for it by saying we are insulting them. I suppose we should all just hold hands and sing kumbya.
 
the rule that seems best, and the one given me when I receive infractions, is to react, comment and respond to the idea or question, not to the individual who posted it.

I’m pretty sure the moderators give us more leeway in our discussions than hand-holding. 😛

Discuss the issues, not each other. That is the mantra. If we follow that advice, we should be just fine. We can disagree without turning things personal.

The Corollary to that rule is: do not assume the other poster is making it personal about you. 🙂 Assume instead that the others are abiding by the same rule as you are.

Ah yes, this is very important! I can’t count the number of threads I’ve seen turn ugly because someone thought a general comment was intended as a personal insult.

What is moral indignation?

Is it, as H.G. Wells said, ‘Jealousy with a holo on’?

Or is it righteous indignation, as when Jesus threw the money lenders out of the temple with a cuff over the ears?

Moral indignation is good if it is justified and truthful.

As Jesus said (John 7:24) “Stop judging by appearances, but judge justly.”

It is personal pride and vanity that brings Catholics to believe that in doctrinal matters they are better to judge than the pope and the bishops. :rolleyes:

What personally appalls me sometimes is the lack of caritas in some posts
