Would it be wrong to work as a cashier at a Kmart or Walmart where you may have to run condoms through the register for someone or some awful Sports Illustrated bikini magazine, etc…

What about Post Office work which may deal at times with the handling of offensive material, such as, delivering a playboy magazine?

How does a Catholic deal with these issues? I recently have been asked to take over a newspaper route. I would like the job but there are things advertised in this newspaper I don’t agree with. Our parish priest did not seem to think it was sinful, but that we should do our best always as a Catholic in each situation. He said it is best to work in a very moral situation, but jobs are hard to come by.

Thanks for your time on this issuel

I think you are being scrupulous. Your intentions are noble, but there is no practical way to go about that. Put a sign at your register that says “no condoms or Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition here”? And for the post office, things like that have discreet packaging so you can’t tell what they are (unless you already know what it is) anyway.

Wasn’t there a story a few years ago where an employee quit (or was she fired?) for not ringing up a customer buying birth control? I recall the story was that this employee typically worked in the stock room but she was called up as a cashier when the store was short handed. When someone came to buy birth control pills she asked for someone else to take over. I then get a little fuzzy whether she quit when on one would take her place or whether she was fired for refusing to ring the person up.

Does anyone else recall a story like this? I tried searching for it but I just don’t recall enough details for an effect search.
