my daughter just finished nursing school.the question she is asking is ,if she gets a job in a hospital which hopefully she will, can she give patients contraceptives or Abortifacient,if she is asked?,what is the teaching of the church on that.also my other daughter wants to go into pharmacy,the question is coming up,if she is the only pharmacist,working that day and somebody came for contraceptives or obortifacients can she in good conscience give it to them.if this going to be an issue will she stop thinking of going to pharmacy school because of that.what if she needs the job for her livelihood.if somebody is just a worker can he hand these contraceptives or obortifacients to the customer without any guilt.

She needs to contact the National Catholic Bioethics Center. She also needs to contact Nurses for Life and Pharmacists for Life.

No, she cannot in good conscience prescribe or dispense contraceptives or abortion drugs nor participate in abortions.

She needs to know her faith and know her rights to conscience exemptions.

Note that there has been [it may be continuing] a legal case where nurses were threatened by job loss if they did not participate in abortions. I think they won, but don’t have the details or a link.

I had to give up my pharmaceutical position. Though the departments were separated they were unable to guarantee I would not be assigned in that area. They were the easiest to fill and the area preferred by most, I believed there should be no problem. My first mistake.

I went to my Parish Pastor and he said “No”. I could have eventually found a priest to tell me different, but who’s fooling who here. I truly liked that position, but did not care for the company’s management. I was never treated poorly but many of the employees weren’t treated well. It ended up being for the best after all. She should be able to find an alternative area to specialize.
