Every now and then I make a realization about our faith which challenges me, and then I could use some moral support. This is one of those moments.

So - I was watching a documentary on life in the time of Jesus… and they were talking about how wine was made… and they showed people trampling on grapes… completely normal for the time, right? Then I suddenly recalled Jesus washing the feet of the disciples, and that it was a task pretty much on the level of a slave, if not lower…

Finally, it occurs to me - if it was beneath the contempt of a slave even to wash feet (I guess because feet got pretty dirty back then with all the farms and animals) - couldn’t they have found a better way to press the wine?

I mean, they used feet to trample grapes, but then they drank the wine…

This has to be one of the hidden mysteries of our faith… No doubt…

People today still use their feet to make wine and other juices.

It adds pizzazz and protein to the final product.

That’s about washing someone elses feet not about washing your own feet.

If you read the Pentateuch carefully you’ll notice the Jewish people had plentiful precepts about personal hygiene.

So, rest assured, before grape treading they washed their feet plentifully. [And even if they didn’t, the wine fermenting would boil at between 120ºF to 140ºF for a few days, thus boiling to death any bacteria. Afterwards it would be decanted and perhaps filtered thus any solid residue would also be removed. They weren’t dumb back then, and the fact they made and drank wine proves as much.]

I’m confused. How does the process people used to make wine in Biblical times bear any relation to our faith? Or result in you needing moral support?

Also, regardless of whether somebody trampling the grapes was Jewish or was a slave/ servant/ paid worker from any other background, their boss would make sure their feet were washed before they used them as tools to prepare a food product for sale. Same as if they worked in a bakery they would have washed their hands before kneading up loaves of bread. People who had money to buy food didn’t want to spend it on dirty, gross food any more than they do today.

Don’t forget the famous Lucy episode. I understand the lady playing opposite her was an actual Italian-speaking professional grape stomper from Napa Valley and that Lucy almost drowned during the following scene where they get into a grape fight.

Oh - for crying out loud - it’s a bit of a joke… Sheesh…
Sorry, but you have to realize people on CAF really do say super ridiculous things in all sincerity, so the joke aspect went right over my head too…🤦‍♂️

😂

Have you seen some of the threads we get around here?! I think you have to forgive some people for not getting the joke.

This was my question, as well.
Oh - for crying out loud - it’s a bit of a joke… Sheesh…

Nevermind… if it is causing that much confusion at this point, I’m done with it…

Someone lock the thread or delete it, please…
What in the world??? That wasn’t even anywhere near what I would consider funny and I fancy I have a fairly well developed sense of humor but…whatever.🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I feel sorry for the lady @mrsdizzyd she obviously “fell into a trap” - it was “a set up”.

I didn’t know about that vid @Tis_Bearself 🙂 thanks.

Great… so now… instead of being merely misunderstood…
I’m being accused of hypocrisy…

Well… knowing my own worthless self so well… and considering the 5th petition of the Our Father… I’m so forgiving - I always have to make sure to ask Jesus to let me sweep the floors of Hell clean before entering me into heaven…

That said… nevertheless… I challenge any exacting, yet sinless souls here - who fail to see the point and humor of my OP - to consider the following proposition before casting the first stone…

I say, I will be happy to come to your house - wash my feet to your satisfaction - and stomp grapes in person… provided you drink it… please note - I will even wait around patiently for a few weeks until it has fermented…

So now - if you decline my proposition - I’m sure you can see the need for some moral support on the issue…

The old ways were… probably… and - in all likelihood - pretty gross…
