My husband has to have a sperm analysis done. I have read that the only moral way of doing this is during intercourse with a perforated condom but on the form it specifically states not to use condoms. I know that some of them have spermicides and therefore would not give an accurate reading of sperm count etc. So what is the answer? I know people on here have discussed this and there is a moral way of doing it, but where do you get condoms that have no lubricants or such that will interfere with the analysis?

I asked this on the Moral Theology forum and have not gotten an answer so I thought I’d post it here too. Hope that’s ok.

That is the moral way…
this is during intercourse with a perforated condom
As to where to buy condoms with no spermicide/lubricant. Check the local pharmacy…they do sell them there.

Jules,
FROM AN RN: A preforated condom can create a problem because vaginal fluid can mix with the sperm. If this is a medical test for “Medical problems”, then you are allowed to do this other ways. Check with your priest and do not accept the information you may get from this site. Your average person (without medical training) cannot understand the many reasons for needing this evaluation of “sperm” and therefore should not be answering your questions. Please just ask your priest. He will guide you.

the PPVI uses preforated condoms to collect sperm samples…and there practices are in-line with Church teaching.

masturbation and withdrawl are not in-line with church teaching.

Why does he need this to be done? My understanding is that there is no moral way to do this.

Yes, there is a way to collect sperm. There is a special condom that has holes in it that is approved by the church.

See # 4 of “Technologies Compatible with Catholic Teachings:

4. Appropriate evaluation and treatment of male factor deficiency. Seminal fluid samples can be obtained from a non-lubricated, perforated condom after normal intercourse.

Many of us have gone through the infertility workup that involves a semen analysis. The only way to do this licitly is to use the specially perforated condom. You have to get these through your doctor–they do not sell condoms with holes in them to the general public! 😉 But it is never OK to use masturbation or withdrawal. You may have to check with a reproductive endocrinologist to get these, many doctors don’t have a clue. Or contact www.popepaulvi.com .

You just suggested that the OP ignore your own advice
Maybe it’s not as strange as it sounds. I’d hate to think somebody made a life-changing decision based on information I typed without checking it out. It is giving me, a stranger, a lot of power. :hmmm:

meh, I would do it the old fashioned way that most people here disagree with as the CC’s anatehma towards masturbation stemmed initially from the mistaken belief that semen was the ‘seed of life’ and that waste of this seed was tantamount to abortion, which is well . . . untrue.

And yeah chronic masturbation is without doubt dangerous especially in adults. . but for a prophylactic use I think it is fine.

Why do something IMMORAL when there is A MORAL way to do it???

Did yer man not say that they were particularily difficult to find anf not 100% reliable?

Even in condoms that dont have spermicide’s would there not be a mixing with the chemicals in the rubber?

Why put yourself to unnecesary bother for something that makes very little difference and is not immoral as he (I assume) has had a perfectly formed integrated psychosexual development, and is not masturbation for stimulation per se, but rather for the perfectly reason of adhering to Gods command to go forth and procreate (I assume the analysis is for fertility purposes but even if not is still relevent)

Unnecessary bother? You are joking right?? And not being immoral becuase your jerking off for medical reasons??

Once again why do something that is IMMORAL when there is a MORAL way??? Your answer would seem to be your too lazy to take the extra step:eek:

I mean how much harder is it to do what the Church asks???
Not very, actually!
