Morality declining, Wickedness Increasing?

I Just started thinking about this today, your thoughts?
I would agree that the general morality of the population is changing, although I wouldn’t call it decline (but I guess it’s not my religions morals it is moving away from.)

As for wickedness however, I tend to associate that with malevolent intent. And I don’t think people are “becoming more evil”.

It might depend on how you measure it. I read once that school violence is down pretty significantly from 40-50 years ago. But at the same time, shootings are happening in schools now, when they weren’t happening back then.

I would tend to agree, people seem to be more centered on the self, less kind to others, possessions, money and status seem to be more important than neighbors. I would love to see the world differently, but sin seems to be running rampant in our world.

OP, its very true and ive noticed that its gotten a lot more worse in the last 10 years, and even more worse in the last 5.

Probably one of the main reasons ive given up in wanting to get married and have children. This world is in such a dismal state i wouldnt want to introduce any more life into it. Forget the fact that finding a good, moral wife is essentially impossible.

I’m just wondering, since while I was at my old friends house, (Whom I thank God I escaped from his group, since the people made me really numb) he was laughing at a video of some guy getting killed. It just scared me a little bit. They also changed the numbers at the gas station price to 666, and they hate me a lot now oddly. A lot of temptation ran out of his mouth while I was their, I just don’t to go back to my days as a kid getting into evil.
Im sorry, but what?

Not in England, people seem much nicer than they normally do and people aren’t acting as rude as they normally do, people just seem to be better than they used to be, I think it’s because people have forgotten about the recession because of the jubilee/Olympics etc and whatever else is on this year.

I remember reading a book by a Japanese women writing in the first decade of the eleventh century, in which she complained about the insolence of youth and the loss of respect in society. Never mind that she spent a whole section complaining about how gross old people were, or regularly spoke of her contempt for the poor and how fun it was to laugh at them.

Everyone always thinks they live in the worst of times. In fact I think that’s why we tend to see the worst in all our circumstances. Truth be told things are better now than they were when I was a kid. Back then everybody smoked and drank a lot more, people seemed ruder, there was a lot more racism and obsession with material things. That being said, it was, after all, the 80s.

There are things that have changed that I dislike. Back then being a teenage mother was still a shameful thing; now it’s practically celebrated, and along with it is the whole “We don’t need a marriage certificate to prove we love each other!” bit. The standard of what sort of dress and grooming is acceptable in public continues to go down. There seems to be very little effort in deciding when/if to have children and even lesser effort is raising said children - many mothers now seem to want to assert their right to party and have multiple boyfriends. But that being said, there is nothing that cannot be changed, and there’s no rule forcing you to comply with society when it’s going down the tubes.

Interesting that you would mention this, as the priest at my parish brought this up during his homily at mass today, albeit in the context of St Benedict’s reasons for entering the monastic life. The priest said that when Benedict was alive in the fourth century, there was much sexual debauchery, excessive hedonism, rampant greed, total disregard and outright contempt for the poor and downtrodden, and a pervasive belief that the individual was the centre of the universe – just like we see today.

There are obviously numerous parallels in history to the world today as regards a general decline in morality: ancient Greece, ancient Rome during the imperial period, and the fourth century being a few.

Peter Hitchens and Melanie Philips would disagree with you. My conversations with people form England seem to go against what you say as well, with last year’s riots being a rather obvious example. Other things painting a less rosy picture would be the problems with Muslim rape and paedophile gangs, and the fact that London is the centre in Europe for Al-Quaeda and other jihad terrorist groups.

I notice that you’re in the North though, so perhaps the fact that these problems are mainly confined to the problematic south-east leaves you largely unaffected.

(Please understand that I don’t with to denigrate England, I’m only pointing out reality as I see it. Indeed, I love the country, its history, the many wonderful things it’s done for constitutional government, the rule of law, our shared monarch, language and traditions etc. It greatly saddens me that the England of Churchill, the England of Monty Python, even the England of only 10 years ago, are so far gone that it’s impossible to realise that the England of today has any connection to that time.)

Indeed England has many problems with its Muslim population. I just read an article today about a very devout, strict Muslim who raped several women because they were out at night. I am so grateful we don’t have that in the US…yet.

Well, for a Wiccan, the morality may not be declining. However, Wiccans have different moral values from Catholics.

That said the Catholic Church has the true moral system and yes, morality is declining and wickedness is increasing. We can see this in many ways. For example, “gay marriage” is becoming much more widespread.
