Hello!

I have two questions that are somewhat related.

Is it immoral/sinful to work as a cleaning person at an abortion clinic?

Is it immoral/sinful to work as a cleaning person at a house where a homosexual couple lives together?

Thank you in advance!

If there were no other jobs available and someone needed the money to live, perhaps not, but working at the abortion clinic would certainly be suspect. Purposefully choosing to work there is probably no good.

Cleaning house for someone “living in sin”? I would pose the question, is it any different than cleaning house where the wife or husband is involved in an adulterous relationship?

One has to keep in mind that both situations may present an opportunity to witness for the Gospel. It’s easy to say, “Yes, both situations are sinful”, but how would we know if God has put a Catholic Christian in that situation for the express purpose of helping to change someone else’s minds and hearts?

🤷

I would say that working as a cleaning person at an abortion clinic would be a sin if something else were available, or if the person working there wasn’t looking for a job somewhere else. There’s not really an opportunity to evangelize, and if one tried they’d probable be fired.

As to cleaning for the couple living in sin, it would depend. There’d be more of an opportunity to evangelize, maybe. If there’s not, I’d look for another couple to work for. Sinful…? This would depend on the availablility of jobs in the area.

In both circumstances (especially the first) the person should ask God to guide them to another job (and search diligently). The second situation, still, I’d say depends on the couple. If the person has conversations with them, and could evangelize a little, then staying may be a good idea. If there’s no communication between the worker and the couple, again, ask God to lead you to another job.

From what I can tell, there is no sin of co-operation in these situations, however, depending on the circumstances, the sin of scandal may come into play.

This may help some:
Material cooperation is considered remote if it is not so closely connected with the evil action. For example, an employee who cleans the operating rooms of the hospital where abortions are performed (along with many other surgeries) would be remotely cooperating with evil. He provides a service that is good in itself but is remotely related to the evil act of abortion. If this employee was opposed to abortion, but worked at this general hospital because he needed employment, then he would not be guilty of sin for this remote degree of cooperation. (His cooperation would change to proximate if he worked at an abortion clinic; then he would be guilty of sin for his proximate material cooperation.)
