Yeah but factor into that the NSA and Patriot Act. The powers are there even if not fully utilized. That worries me personally. When a coercive power has the capability to utilize such strong measures I’m uneasy, myself.
Well, those were powers that the populace stampeded into when they were afraid. Yes, I do think that fearful or resentful or angry populations tend to rush into things that we could all live to regret. Still, that is more something to be watchful about than to lose sleep over. (That is what Our Lord meant about keeping our minds on today’s troubles.)

Our Prime Minister Jacinda has some wise words:
Stay at home, break the chain and save lives!
Being a small island, you have an excellent prospect of eliminating the virus and holding out till the vaccine is available. You can open up your economy but not allow visitors without quarantine. Maybe no quarantine from selected low infection countries: Australia, Singapore, HK, Taiwan.

The question is can you survive without robust tourism?

The American people have been sold a complete “bait and switch” bill of goods by liberal, power-hungry politicians.

The lockdowns were initially sold on the basis that it would likely be a “few weeks” so the “healthcare system didn’t get overwhelmed” and we could “pace infections.” We were told we had to “flatten the curve.”

That has all come to pass. NY’s death rate & hospitalization rate are half what they were 2 weeks ago. The navy hospital ship sent to NY harbor has left. NJ’s death rate a week ago was 350 deaths per day. Yesterday it was 79. The curve has flattened.

That isn’t just the hot spots: Kauai County, Hawaii has zero deaths and 21 known cases. It has had no new cases in a week.

How have the liberal dems responded? NJ’s democrat governor extended the lockdown indefinitely “until further notice” today. The liberal democrat governor of Hawaii extended Hawaii’s lockdown another month despite a flat curve.

NOW, the people are being told something totally different, and, worse, there are really no metrics for when a full lockdown will be lifted. It seems to be “until the virus is eradicated,” or “until there is testing for everyone,” and other vague metrics, none of which were the reasons for the lockdown.
Now the’re saying things like, “keep the lockdown till the second wave is over!” or “till after the election!”

See how this is a bait and switch? The reason for the lockdown has changed 180 degrees.

When Governor Murphy was asked by Tucker Carlson on what basis he suspended the bill of rights, he responded, “the Bill of Rights is above my pay grade.”

You watch - this is going on around us. The liberal nanny-state “we know what’s best for you”-governments will continue erode your rights, and to offer different reasons for the lockdown, all of which will be some permutation of “it’s just not safe yet!”

Unfortunately one could argue this has precedent in the response to 9/11 when the Bill of Rights was done away with to stop ‘terrorism’ in all its guides.

All of which goes to prove Robert Higgs correct in his ratchet effect analysis.

Whether the Bill of Rights can be suspended is not what I’m speaking about. What I’m referencing is that the reasons for the lockdown are now completely different from the reasons initially given.

Our knowkedge about the disease and its effects has changed since lockdown was first imposed.

In particular, we have seen the extent of the spike in cases in China and Japan when restrictions have been lifted in those places. We have seen individuals reinfected and the like.

And hello - America? Most litigious society on Earth? Where are the flood of.civil rights lawsuits if governments are acting improperly?

While I do not necessarily oppose the lock down, I do realize that filing a law suit, especially a civil law suit, is more expensive than one would think. Thanks for your reply and God bless!

Not saying you in particular. Surely it could.be a matter for a class-action suit, and given the size of the class and potential damages there would be hungry llawyersand litigation funders licking their chops if it was half-viable.

I’m sure some such suits have been filed. Some of these take time to percolate through the court system. I also think there’s a lot of fear.

People’s rights may be infringed upon whether the victims are happy about it or not. The best way to steal someone’s rights? Do it in such a way where the victim says, “this is for my own good.”

It’s quite clear plenty of people aren’t happy. In fact many are deeply unhappy. People who aren’t scared to go out and protest woyld hardly be scared to take part in a lawsuit.

Heck, I’ve been lightly affected, not ordered to stay home, not lost my job or had my business negatively affected, and I.am.far from happy.

It made sense to shut everything down when we had cause to believe that the mortality rate was as high as 8%. Now that we know its mortality rate is no worse than the seasonal flu, however, we should open things up cautiously, careful to protect the vulnerable without preventing those who can work from doing so.

We must sacrifice freedom to survive this pandemic of deadly disease without vaccine or clear cure. For rural area, it maybe more flexibility for lock down.

They estimated 225K to 425K infected at large in Los Angeles. If re-opening the economy then it is the end like NYC.

I have found the most threat is the evil spirits’ affect to the morality in spiritual life even with a lot of prayers! I concern this more than the physical lock down. Please pray for me, and I pray for you all.
