Morality/Sex Education: Need help

Greetings from an infrequent reader and almost-never-poster,

I am a homeschooling mom and have reached the point at which I need to have “the talk” with my very innocent sixth grade daughter. I have searched online for a good Catholic text which encompasses both the moral and physiological aspects of sex education. Maybe I’m not searching the right way, but I’ve come up emptyhanded and am wondering if any of you can recommend some resource material.

The best resource? Well, you, of course. The wisdom of a mother is the best resource of all… you just have to find it within yourself. 🙂 As far as children and “the talk” are concerned, a child is ready for the talk at any age, the problem is whether they’re old enough to understand. :yup:

Be honest with her and answer any question she has. Stay away from bias and stay away from your own discomfort (if any)-- I could not stress that enough. Be calm and teach as best as you can. If there is something you don’t know on the subject, do some research or go to your nearest bookstore and get a preteen-friendly book on sex education for guidance. 😉

From my perspective, the question is just how 'innocent" is “very innocent”. Determining if material is age appropriate will be your judgement call.

Jason Evert has his Catholic chastity talks online too. See his web site:

but I think his material is more appropriate for mid-teens.
 
I highly recommend a beautiful little book entitled “Joyful Mysteries of Life” by Catherine and Bernard Scherrer. The Scherrers are Catholic and write the book from that perspective. It is perfect for pre-teens.
 
I think it’s always also useful to use a biology textbook and to be very mechanical before talking about your beliefs about sex and marriage. Just to explain what you mean and what you’re talking about exactly.
