Maybe even one for kids? I am a convert so my knowledge has come from a variety of sources… lots of different books, this forum, other Catholics etc. But hubby and I are trying to start a book collection and I want one book that sort of sums up the hows and whys of our faith. I will add the more in depth books later… any thoughts?

Catholicism for Dummies is really good. I bought it while I was looking into joining the faith. It’s a good overview of the major Church teachings, and even defends the Church’s stance on a few of the more controversial issues.

This is the Faith (TAN books) by Canon Ripley.

Great book! I’m using it to homeschool one of my teens.

Try this: www.amm.org. These books are very good about explaining the faith in a way we can all understand.Father Lukerfur is gifted.🙂

I was going to suggest Catholicism for Dummies and Why Do Catholics do that, but they’ve been suggested already!

This isn’t about the Catholic faith, but I bought Picture Book of Saints when I was first learning about all the saints, and I really love it. 🙂 It’s for kids, but as a 24 year old, I still got a lot out of it.

Second, or is it third, this one!!

The next I’d suggest is George Weigel’s “Letters To A Young Catholic”

The Faith Explained by Leo j Trese.

Its not a beginner book, and can be dated at times, but it explains in better detail for a Catholic with deeper “why?” questions.

The New Joseph Baltimore Catechism (No1, No2 and First Communion are available)

Reasons to Believe (I haven’t read this one, but it’s Scott Hahn, so should be pretty good)

Al Kresta–Why do Catholics Genuflect and Why Are Catholics concerned about Sin

When we converted we read Why Do Catholics Do That? (already suggested) and a catechism the Church gave us, it was in question and answer format. We listened to tons of Catholic radio (we lived in Ann Arbor/Detroit so got Ave Maria Radio!).

Hope that helps!

I got SIRIUS radio so I could hear him! 😃
Then you have to make the big decision - Kresta or Lino (ooooohhhh the choices…)

Sorry for the derail.

Um, no, I will re-rail it. Catholic Radio, on line or on Sirius is a great easy way to learn about the Faith!!! 👍

I am a convert and the book I have found the most helpful for what you are looking for would probably be the Baltimore Catechism. It is in Q&A form and covers everything in basic form without sacrificing anything.

i know its already been mentioned but i just wanted to add that i LOVED Why Do Catholics Do That…it helped me immensely.
