I need more advice on how to set a boundary. In a previous post, I wrote about this lady I am on a committee with and I am supposed to be taking over for her. And she is totally disorganized, never gives me clear instructions, never gives me the information I will need to take over and always talks social instead of business. Also, she is very opinionated and it is hard to have a conversation with her because she turns everything into an argument.
We will be having a meeting at her house soon. I do not want to spend any more time than necessary there. I want to go, do business and come home. I do NOT want to end up staying there all night talking (which consists of me listening to her because I am petrified anything I say will turn into an argument).
I know from experience if I say directly ‘Can we please have an agenda beforehand because there is a lot to get done and I don’t have much time’, just the fact that I asked will probably be her motivation to not do it. Also, I think she will perceive it as me trying to control the situation. She is one of those people who ALWAYS resist request even when they are made in the spirit of doing what is best for the team. I also think if I was to say ‘I know you are busy, can I make the agenda’, she would probably just ignore the agenda I make, or criticize it and she definitely will think I am being controlling. Even though I am trying to help out. (After all, if her disorganization continues I may have to leave the committee and my intention is to stay on the committee)
So how do people feel I should handle it? Since we have had a few meetings already and the tone is set, I don’t feel comfortable asking for things to change without providing a solution. However, since experience has taught me there is NO working things out with her, I am starting to think my best bet is to put it in an email ‘Sally, I will have to leave at 9pm’. And everytime she goes on a tangent, say ‘Sally, just a friendly reminder I am leaving at 9’ And at 9 getting up and leaving.
What do others think?
